| Note | Captain Hugh Mason was born in 1606 in Maldon, Essex Co., England. Hesigned a will on 3 Dec 1677 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA. In theInventory taken on 28 Oct 1678 by John Sherman, William Bond and WalterHesting, many items were listed room by room. The rooms were: parlor,hall, lodging room, celler (sic), leantoo, and chamber. Outside therewas a horse cart with iron ringed wheels, some iron and tools, 2 cows, 3horses, and hay in the barn. He had debts of 53 £ or more and valueapproaching 300 £. A year later his son Joseph inventoried it again atdebts of about 53 £ and value of about 100 £. Difficult to follow theaccounting. The compiler reminds us that he was not a farmer even thoughhe had some land. He died on 10 Oct 1678 in Watertown, Middlesex Co.,MA. He was buried in Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA. Arlington StreetCemetery. Hugh MASON, tanner, age 28, and his wife Hester, age 22,departed Ipswich, England 10 April 1634 in the ship 'Francis'. Shipcaptained by John Cutting. No details have been discovered concerninghis parents. He was admitted freeman 4 Mar 1634/35 at Watertown, MA, andheld many positions of responsibility throughout his life. MadeLieutenant in 1647. Governor John Endicott commissioned him Captain Apr.5, 1652, and he commanded a company during the colonial wars.Inventories after his death indicate he was a man of moderate means andan active merchant in his trade as tanner. Watertown Selectman 1639-1678. Commissioner to end small causes in 1643. Deputy to Gen. Court for10 years in period 1644-1677. Empowered to solemnize marriage in May 1648. |
