Reign*John Balliol , King of Scots reigned between 17 November 1292 and 10 July 1296. Following the death of his predecessor Scotland entered a period of interregnum. Several competitors vied for the Scottish throne. John Balliol was chosen as the new King of Scotland by a group of noblemen, headed by King Edward of England, on 17 November 1292. It was Edward's intention to undermine Balliol's reign, resulting in the Scottish nobility deposing him. Edward then invaded Scotland, which marked the beginning of the Scottish Wars of Independence. Scotland was defeated in 1296, after which Balliol abdicated, 10 July 1296, and was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Eventually, Balliol was exiled to France, where he died. Scotland was left without a monarch until the accession of Robert the Bruce in 1306.1,3
