It was Edward's intention to undermine Balliol's reign, resulting in the Scottish nobility deposing him. Edward then invaded Scotland, which marked the beginning of the Scottish Wars of Independence. Scotland was defeated in 1296, after which Balliol abdicated, 10 July 1296, and was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Eventually, Balliol was exiled to France, where he died. Scotland was left without a monarch until the accession of Robert the Bruce in 1306.1,3 |
