| Note | PART II The story of Richard Thomas Ennis being lost has been past down fromgeneration to generation. We had been told that Tom was one of four boyswhen the family emigrated from Ireland. In the article below of Tom'sobituary it states there was eventually a family of ten, possibly morechildren being born to his parents after their arrival in the UnitedStates. We had been told that Tom was raised by a Minister and his wife, their names are not known to anyone. In the obituary of one of Tom andFanny's daughters, Jessie Lavina, her parent's names were listed asRichard Thomas Ennis and Fanny Ennis. This is the only time I have founda second name mentioned for Tom Ennis. The Ennis farm and barn arestill in use today. The house has a two foot thick rock foundation. Thebarn has the same sturdy foundation with large hand hewn beams. Tom andFanny have over three hundred direct descendents to date (1979), livingfrom Ontario across Canda to British Columbia, as well as some living inthe United States. It has been very interesting work for me trying tocompile this information about my ancestors. I hope everyone will enjoygetting to know their family. --- Sherrie Lyne (Ennis) HalmeHaines 4863 Cordova Bay Road, Victoria, B.C., Canada V8y 2J9 Phone1-250-658-8429 E-mail: <haines@@coastnet.com ......................................................................................................................................................................... Thomas Ennis. The following is the obituary of Tom Ennis as it appearedin the Brussels Post, (Brussels, Ontario) of Wednesday, August 3, 1925: 'Thursday morning of last week, Thomas Ennis, a Resident of Grey Townshipfor sixty-nine years, passed away at the home of his son-in-law JacobLong, where he had his home for the past eight years. Mrs. Long, being adaughter. Although he had been in failing health for some time he wasonly confined to his bed four weeks. His wife, who was Francis Taylorpredeceased him December 25, 1916. Twelve children were born to the homeas follows: R. C. of Senlac, Saskatchewan; Mrs. J. R. Hamilton,Edmonton; Frank (deceased) ; Mrs. J. T. Brown, Stratford, Ontario, Mrs.W. McLaughlin (deceased) ; Sidney of Kelwood, Manitoba; Joseph (deceased); Mrs. F. J. Smith, Dauphin, Manitoba; William of Rupert, Idaho;Frederick of Brussels; Mrs. J. Hollinger (deceased) ; and Mrs. J. Longwith whom the deceased had made his home since the death of Mrs. Ennis. There are forty-one grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.Funeral was held on Saturday afternoon from the home of Jacob Long, interment being made in Brussels Cemetery. Rev. Shannon, Cranbook, conducted the services. The pallbearers were: - J. Hollinger, J.Cameron, P. Baker, Joseph Long, John Long. Deceased was born in Irelandand was the son of the late Davd and Isabelle (Taylor) Ennis. When a boyof ten years he came to Canada with his parents. On his arrival atQuébec he became separated from the other members of the family andalthough an untiring search was kept up he never heard of them untilabout two years ago a nephew, John Ennis, was located in Saskatchewan. He said all the other members were deceased, so the late Thomas Ennis wasthe last of a family of ten. Floral Tributes consisted of two pillowsfrom all the family; two sheafs from the grandchildren.' Another article appeared in the Brussels Post on Thomas Ennis of March 5,1903: 'Thomas Ennis sold his farm to John McNabb. Price being $5,000.00. Heis holding an auction sale. It is 40 years since Mr. Ennis and wife cameto this locality, purchasing their farm from a Mr. Knox of Seaforth, there being about an acre cleared on the 100 acres. They moved here fromKleinburg, Vaughan, Ontario, being married shortly before. Prosperityhas attended their industry and economy and many old friends will regrettheir intended removal yet with them many happy years to enjoy a wellearned rest. There is a more or less a romance connected with Mr. Ennis'early life. Coming from Ireland to Québec when a boy of 10 or 12 yearsof age he was out seeing the city with one of his old country neighborsand on his return to the stopping place, to his dismay, found that theboat had gone with his parents but their destination he did not know -supposedly to the state of Massachusetts. The lonely boy came westwardto Vaughan with his Irish friend 'and paddled his own canoe' ever since. He wrote the old country to ascertain where the parents were located butnever found out to this day. Relatives in the old land wrote him that hewas supposed to be drowned and was no doubt mourned by his parents asdead. Of course in those days postal and telegraph communications werevery different to what they are today and newspapers were a rarity.'. |
