Cottle was one of the Charter members of the Canning Churchin 1800. Nathaniel was 'one of the old school' who still wore a stock, ahigh hat and linen duster when the style had long passed. '[03] page 62 ' When in 1834 there was internal trouble in the Canning Church, he wasone of a group who formed a new church at Upper Gagetown. The recordreads, 'A returned Gideon,' a truly descriptive phrase, no doubt, for hehad much of the fire and positive conviction of the early Baptists.'
