In the spring of 1990 Richard moved to Alabama to be near his daughters and to try to develop a relationship with them. He loved to sing 'Just a closer walk with Thee' and 'I'm Just a Wayfaring Stranger'. At the time of his death he was preparing a sermon for the Methodist church in Verbena, Alabama. On Saturday, 16 February, 1991 in his trailer home in Verbena, Alabama, his water pipes had frozen. He was using a torch to free them when he had a massive heart attack and died.
