NoteHymen Parker, son of Silas Parker and Olive M. Lake, was born 15 Mar 1841in New York State, U.S.A., and died 22 Mar 1924 in Hammond, Lake County,Indiana married Ann Elizabeth 'Eliza' White 24 Dec 1861, daughter ofJesse White and Millie Norton who was born 08 Jan. 1841 in GermanTownship, Chenango County, New York, U.S.A. and died 23 Nov. 1929 inHammond, Lake Co. Indiana. Notes for HYMEN PARKER: Spelling of his name is shown either Hyman or Hymen. A letter written by Hyman's sister Jennie states that when she was bornin 1849 that the family lived in Michigan and that she had 2 olderbrothers and 3 older sisters. Census records show he was born in New York St. and also both hisparents. His parents and the older children were probably born in NY St. and movedto Michigan before Jennie was born. (Millie's death certificate saysher father was born in Michigan, but he was young so probably did notremember being in NY. His wife Ann Elizabeth 'Eliza' White. was born in New York State. Herfamily also moved to Michigan and after she and Hyman married they movedto IN. They lived in Crown Point, Indiana. Went by covered wagon before 1876 toSac City, Iowa. {Historical notes from Sac City say than many familiescame there from Indiana as that area was surveyed and opened tosettlers}. Their 5th daughter Millie was born in Sac City but the familymust have become homesick and they were back in Crown Point, IN before1881 when the youngest daughter, Alta, was born. Aunt Pearl said he wasa school janitor in later years. His death certificate does say he andhis father were both born in New York State. He is buried in Oak HillCemetery, Hammond, IN. Died at age 73, he was listed as married, retired, died at home of a cerebral hemorrhage. Undertaker was N.Emmerling. Millie said her parents were buried side by side - Hyman wasprobably living with daughter Stella when he died in 1914 at age 73. ------- Crown Point 1840 William Butler was the first known to make claims in June or July of1834. Four claims were made by him, one for himself, one for his brotherE.P. Butler, one for George Wells and the last for Theodore Wells. He didnot settle on these claims at that time though. The first settlement thatI have found occurred shortly after November 1, 1834, which is when hemade claim, by Solon Robinson and family. He held the deed to the land that the courthouse stands on today. As of 1873, the courthouse that was prominent was one built in 1849 byGeorge Earle, architect, and Jeremy Hixon, builder. The present daycourthouse was erected in 1878 and is now a well-preserved museumreflecting on the history of Crown Point. Population grew steadily fromabout 1,300 in 1873, to about 2,300 in 1900. The town was incorporated in1868. ------------- 1880 Federal Census: Census Place: Center Township, Lake Co, Indiana Source: FHL Film 1254291 National Archives Film T9-0291 Page 557C Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Hiram PARKER Self M M W 39 NY (namespelled incorrectly) Occupation: Farmer Fa: NY Mo: NY Ann E.
