Her mother Lydia (Eliza) lived with her there for a while. We have snapshots of the two of them at the beach in CA. She ended up in Cheyenne, WY. Earl & family stopped to visit her there on a trip to Texas, perhaps 1947. She died in Cheyenne of cancer. She is shown as deceased in the obit of her sister Alta, 1962. We have a photo of Bessie as a younger woman, perhaps late 30's?. Also photo taken at the beach in California with her mother Lydia. Millie and family stopped to see her on one of their trips to California and Millie made the following comment in her journal: 'Seen Bess, nice looking old lady. Ignorant, as always.'.2 |

In 1931they were traveling cross-country again. Ken Hartlerode was with them,in June they were in CA, they camped out, worked odd jobs, picked fruit,etc. An entry for Apr. 29, 1932 says they left Gary, IN, camped ontheir way? On Oct. 18, 1932 they again left Wheaton, IL - on the 23rdthey blew a tire in the Ford and it overturned & was totaled, she andMabel slightly hurt. Bill & Gene came for them and by Nov. 7 were inAlabama there Lewis & Goldie were living. By 1934 most of the familywas in Pacoima, CA. She talks about going to Mint Canyon to go panningfor gold. There is a photo showing Pearl, Will, their Gene; Millie;Louis, Goldie, their Pearl and Sonny - they are sitting in from of 2 oldautos wearing old clothes. The women have jeans on, etc. Aunt Pearl sent me a kit from her Mother, Millie. It is made of felt,has a thimble, needles and a very old pair of scissors. Millie workedin a place in Cincinnati, OH and 6 pair of the scissors came to the shopfrom Germany, she bought all 6 pair to give to her 6 children. From DowCo., last shipment as WWI was starting. Chicago hadrows and rows of apartments and all had 3 stories with stairs andbalconies at the rear of the building - Ella lived on the 3rd floor ofone of these row houses.
