Obituary (Agriculturist, 31 May 1902): "On Wednesday evening last Capt. Thomas Whittemore Read passed away, after a protracted illness, which he bore with great patience and resignation. The deceased, who was a son of the late Ephraim Read, of Sackville, N.B., and later of Wilmot, followed the sea for many years, and in 1880 received his certificate as Master Mariner. He commanded successively the barque Josephine, the brig Rowena, the barque Annie Maude and the barqt. Roland, after which he “retired” from the sea and carried on farming until 1890, when he became a member of the firm of Joseph Read & Co., retaining his partnership in that firm until a short time ago.
Capt. Read was a genial and good-hearted man, and popular with all who knew him. He was a progressive and public-spirited citizen, and was upright and honorable in all business transactions, and he will be much missed in the town. He leaves a wife and two children, who have the sympathy of this community in their sorrow. Capt. Joseph Read, M.L.A., Summerside, Rev. Ephraim Read of Bethel, Vt., David P. Read, Wilmot, and Chas. B. Read, Coleman are brothers and Mrs. John Lefurgey and Mrs. Wm. MacGregor, Summerside, sisters of the deceased. He was a member of Mount Lebanon Lodge No. 6 A.F. & A.M. and of Court Chautauqua, No. 202 I.O.F., Summerside, and his funeral takes place at 2.30 p.m. today (Friday) to Summerside cemetery, with Masonic and Forestric honors."
Obituary (Summerside Journal, 31 May 1902): "Summerside is again called upon to mourn the death of an honored and highly respected citizen. Capt. Thomas Whittemore Read, for a number of years one of our prominent business men, after an illness of some months, passed to his rest Wednesday night about 10 o’clock at the early age of 46. The end was not unexpected. A few months ago failing health compelled him to retire from the active duties of life; since than the shadows gradually deepened, night crept on and he fell asleep. He was a man of sterling integrity, generous to a fault and honorable in all his dealings. A host of friends and acquaintances will sincerely mourn his death.
At an early age he went to sea and secured a mate’s certificate in 1880. Shortly afterwards he became a master mariner and successively commanded the barque Josephine, the brig Rowena, the barque Annie Maud and the barkt. Roland. In 1887 he took up his residence at Read’s Corner and three years afterwards became a member of the firm of Joseph Read & Co., the business of which he superintended during the absence at sea of the senior partner and until his retirement a few months ago.
A sorrowing widow and two children survive him, besides two sisters, Mrs. Lefurgey and Mrs. Wm. McGregor, and four brothers, David P. Read, Read’s Corner, Rev. Ephraim Read, Bethel, Vt., Capt. Joseph Read, M.L.A., and Charles R. Read, Coleman. Deceased was an honored member of Court Chautauqua, I.O.F., and of Mt. Lebanon Lodge, A.F. & A.M. His funeral which took place yesterday under the joint auspices of Mt. Lebanon Lodge and Court Chautauqua, was very largely attended, the brethren turning out in full force to pay the last tribute of respect to one whom they esteemed most highly. To his sorrowing widow, little children and relatives we tender our deepest sympathy."6
