| Note | He is referred to in the book, ' St. John River and its Tributaries', by Esther Clark Wright, on pages 101, 102 and 170. Archelaus Hammond, himself an ex-soldier, had settled in the Gagetown area before Elijah moved there. The Hammonds came from Marblehead. His sister Sarah was baptized there 21 October 1739. On 24 September 1764, she married James Oakes. They moved from Marblehead to Cornwallis and quite possibly encountered Elijah and Mary Estabrooks there. Sarah had four children by James Oakes: James (junior), Benjamin, Sarah and Christopher (Christopher was born in 1773). James (senior) died about the same time as Mary Hackett. Sarah Oakes brought her small family to Gagetown and married Elijah Estabrooks on 17 December 1778. They had a further two children, Elizabeth (Betsy) born 30 October 1779, and Hammond, born 29 January 1783. Archelaus Hammond moved to Kingsclear at the same time. He received one lot there and his eldest son received another. The lots in Cambridge were beautifully situated on a ridge overlooking the Jemseg river at its entrance to Grand Lake. The Garrison graveyard was just over the fence on a slope stretching down to a creek. |
