Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church this afternoon w/burial at Sugartown where services were conducted by the GAR of which he was a member. He was in fairly good health until about 3 years ago since which time he has failed rapidly. His death was very sudden although he had been so feeble;he was talking with his grandson not over 3 minutes before he passed away. Mr. BOWEN was born at Cattaraugus Creek,Erie Co, March 18, 1818. When about 1 year old his parents moved to East Otto where he lived until about 28 years ago when he moved to Humphrey & later to Collins,Erie Co. About 2 years ago on account of failing health he came to live w/his son Clark where he has since made his home. In 1837 he was united in marriage with Lucinda CLARK of Machias who died about 20 years ago. 4 children were born to them-3 boys-Levi, Clark & Manie-&1 girl Viola who lives in Oshkosh WI. In 1840 he united with the Free Baptist church, where he remained a consistent member up to his death. Included in the household with Elias (age 57) were his wife Lydia Wellington (age 17), their children Joseph (age 17), Lydia (age 14), Azem (age 10) & Judson (age 6), and their grandchildren Alzina J. Sherwood (age 10) and Electa Anna Sherwood (age 5), daughters of Lorana Bowen & Frank Sherwood.5
Witness	She was enumerated on the census on 19 June 1855 in the household of Elias Bowen, Sr., in East Otto, Cattaraugus County, New York, USAG. included in the household with Elias Sr. (age 62) were his wife Lydia (age 58), children Lydia (age 19), Daniel (age 17), Azem F. (age 15) & Judson (age 11), and granddaughter Electa Sherwood (age 11). Elias, Daniel & Azem were farmers.6
Witness	She was enumerated on the census on 30 August 1860 in the household of Elias Bowen, Sr., in Machias, Cattaraugus County, New York, USAG. There is some confusion about the line entries in this census. Daniel was still a young man, newly married, and named first in the household, implying that he was Head of Household. Yet, the entry for the value of the farm was recorded on the line for his father Elias. I am assuming that Elias was actually Head of Household. Included in the household with Elias (age 67), his wife Lydia Wellington (age 61), their son Daniel (age 21) and his wife Rebecca (age 20).7
Death	She died on 2 March 1861 in East Otto, Cattaraugus County, New York, USAG.3,8
Burial	She was buried in East Otto Cemetery, East Otto, Cattaraugus County, New York, USAG.
