He returned East in 1861 or 2,perhaps on business, and d. very suddenly in Providence, R. I. [BallouGen] The Mowry Gen. calls him Nelson H. Mowry Nelson H. Mowry was a farmer and a mason. For some years he followed thesea. Twice he went to California, remaining a year or more in the miningdistrict. But the most of his life he passed in mercantile business inProvidence. He came to Providence with his brother Daniel, in 1832, anddied there April 8, 1868, aged nearly 60 years. (Descendants of NathanielMowry, p.265.)

NoteNELSON MOWRY, son of Nelson H., early emigrated to California, where hebecame somewhat famous as a horseback rider. He is said to have rode 300miles in 14 hours and 9 minutes, mounting and dismounting 286 times,using 30 horses, and losing 15 pounds in his weight, during the time ofriding. In the summer of 1876, he made a tour through New England and the MiddleStates with his California Polo Club, giving exhibitions of the excitinggame of polo. His feats in horsemanship were truly wonderful, asdescribed by the multitudes who witnessed them. He died of yellow feverin New Orleans, in the early summer of 1878.
