In early life hewas a tanner, but afterwards, and for most of his life, a farmer. He wasfor one term, commencing about 1830, sheriff of Chautauqua county, N. Y.,and in 1840 was a member of the state Legislature. Soon after this heemigrated to Michigan, and settled on a farm near Ann Arbor.
