He removed with his father'sfamily to Wallingford, Vt., in 1797; went with his brother Christopher to Springville, N. Y., in 1811; returned to Vermontat the close of the year, and married Lucy Townsend, of Wallingford, in1812 or 1813. In 1814 he emigrated to Fredonia, N. Y. In early life hewas a tanner, but afterwards, and for most of his life, a farmer. He wasfor one term, commencing about 1830, sheriff of Chautauqua county, N. Y.,and in 1840 was a member of the state Legislature. Soon after this heemigrated to Michigan, and settled on a farm near Ann Arbor.
