BirthLeonard Townsend was born About 1841, in Point de Bute, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada, 45.903616, -64.250448G. there is some doubt as to whether Leonard is a son of Thomas and Eunice. There is a Leonard Townsend listed in the 1851 census when Eunice was a widow and head of the household. There is no entry in the relationship to head of household box for Leonard. There is also a wide difference in age between Leonard and Eunice's known children, leading one to speculate that Leonard might have been a nephew or grandson. That Leonard was recorded as being 9 years old, which coincides with his known birth year.2,3
WitnessHe was enumerated on the census in 1851 in the household of Eunice Read in Jolicure, Westmorland County, New BrunswickG. included in the household with Eunice (age 61), now widowed, were four of her children, William (age 22), James (age 27), Amanda (age 18) and Jane (age 23). There was also a yet identified person, Leonard Townsend (age 9). They lived on the property adjacent to Eunice's son John Townsend.4
1851 Canada East Census, Jolicure, Westmorland County, New Brunswick. Household of Eunice (Read) Townsend, and four of her children, William, James, Amanda and Jane.
Marr BondHe posted a marriage bond on 14 May 1864 in Cumberland County, Nova ScotiaG.5
MarriageHe married Sarah Elizabeth Boss daughter of Nathan Boss and Mary, on 22 July 1864, in Springhill, Cumberland County, Nova ScotiaG.6
LivingLeonard Townsend was living in Springhill, Nova ScotiaG, in 1871.6
CensusHe was head of the household in the census in March 1871 in River Philip, Cumberland County, Nova ScotiaG. included in the household with Leonard (age 28) were his wife Sarah Boss (age 28), and children Julia (age 6), William (age 4) and Susan (age 1 month). Leonard was a carpenter. The family religion was Wesleyan Methodist.7
