She spent her childhood in Hollis,Maine; attended Abbot Academy,Andover, Mass., and in 1876 removed toLos Angeles, CA., where she studiedkindergartening, and afterteaching in Santa Barbara college for a year,she organized in SanFrancisco the first free kindergartens for poorchildren on thePacific slope in 1878, and in 1880, with her sister, NoraArchibald Smith, started a training school in connection with therm. Shewas married in 1880 to Samuel Bradley Wiggin of San Franscisco and=in1888 to New York City, where Mr. Wiggin died the following year.in 1895she was married to George Christopher Riggs, but continued towrite underthe name of Kate Douglas Wiggin. She alsowrote with her=the 'Story Hour' (1890); 'Children's Rights' (1892); and'The=of Childhood' (3 vols., 1895-6); and edited with her two volumesofpoetry for children and young people. 'Golden Numbers' andthe'PosyRing' (1902). She also set to music 'Nine Love Songs and aCarol'(1896). KATE DOUGLAS SMITH (1856-1923). In 1881 she married Samuel BradleyWIGGIN (d. 1889) as her first husband. Her second husband, GeorgeChristopher RIGGS (d. post-1923), was wed in 1895. She was the author ofMy Garden of Memory (1923) which recounted many details about the life ofher mother (Helen E. Dyer) and her grandfather (Jones Dyer Jr.; P7;1776-1860).
