Biographical Note |
- The family lived in Savannah during the Civil War. She died August 28, 1944,at age 80, at Buffalo, Wyoming. She was buried by her husband in the family plot at the Hulett Cemetery. Belle taught school till she married. In the early days of the stage line from Spearfish, South Dakota to Miles City, Montana, the Riverdale Ranch was a stage stop. Belle's ancestor, Hamon Massey, was listed in the Domesday Book. Hamo de Masci came to England from Macey, La Mauche, Normandy at the time of William the Conqueror in 1066. He is listed in the Falaise Roll as a companion of William the Conqueror. His name was anglicized to Hamon Massey. He became Baron of Dunham Massey of Cheshire. Hamon Massey was one of the palatinate barons. A descendant, Peter Massey, patented land in New Kent County, Virginia in 1682.
