- He was a farmer by trade. He married Myrtle Long July 3,1898 and they had 5 children. Myrtle died in childbirth bearing Paul Hammond Chamberlayne on Dec. 20, 1980. The Methodist Pastor’s wife Mrs. D.O. Chamberlayne (sp?) in Elkland? loved him so much that they adopted him; (They had just lost a baby of their own). When Sarah T. Tubbs married Charles Hammond in Osceola, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1908, she expected to have two of his children, but ended up having 4! -- The other two were with relatives! In those days, Charles was a dairy farmer in Osceola, Pennsylvania. They rented the Buckley farm across the river (south) from Osceola. - That’s where Sarah was a housekeeper for Charles and the children before they were married. After they were married, Charles, Sarah and the family moved to a house in Osceola where they rented. Charles always wanted a place of his own, so finally they were able to buy the big dairy farm in Lindley, Steuben County, New York where most of the children were raised. They rented a house on 1st St. in Corning, Steuben County, New York for a short time, Charles worked as a parking meter money gatherer. Then they bought the place at 22 Elm St., Corning -- as told to JJR IV by Sarah Hammond, Everson, Whatcom County, Washington March 1972. Charles died May 20, 1957 in Corning, Steuben County, New York. We, John Jay and Nancy Dorian nee Mehner Ruhlman have in our possession a diary kept by his wife, Sarah in the last year or so of his life; also, we, John Jay and Nancy Dorian nee Mehner Ruhlman have his Dixon Analytical Bible which was printed in 1941 where he included much of his family data. Included in that Bible was a set of notes of his own handwriting: I Peter 1 : 22 I. 'First condition of Sanctification is Justification. One is to be Justified in order that they might be sanctified The forgiveness of sin is not an end, but a means to and end II. The consciousness of our need of a pure heart is another condition. It is impossible to take a step in the divine life without theconsciousness of this need. John 7 : 37 -- Matt 5: 6 It is only the soul that feels the “War in its Members” that criesout -- 'Who shall deliver me from the body of this death.' With some, tis a great struggle for they have more light and havemore to settle than others. III. Faith in Christ is also a condition. Don’t try to make works the ground of your sanctification; onlyfaith can bring the blessing. The Agents in the work of sanctification are the same as in our Redemption God the Father- The Son and the Holy Spirit 'The very God of peace sanctify you wholly' To them that are sanctified by God the Father and preserved inJesus Christ -- ' Jude Truth or God’s Word is also an Agent in this work. 'Sharper than any two-edged sword ---, is a discerner of thethoughts-- ' Salvation is to remove that which has been marred by sin. The Spirit burns up the dross -- and renders useless The principle of sin in the soul. Sin is a reproach to God. A true and devoted service always follows the cleaning of theheart. The Bible becomes a new Book for the Holy Spirit unlocks itstruth.' Charles A. Hammond, Corning, Steuben County New York, about 1955
