- Obituary: Lanesboro Journal, published 1 February 1907.
"DEATH OF CAPT. McGREW.
Pioneer of this State and County Passes Away.
"Captain James G. McGrew of St. Paul, a Minnesota pioneer and for many years a prominent resident of Fillmore county, died Wednesday at the age of 73. The Captain was a brother of Mrs. G. W. Wall, the mother of the Wall boys who figured so prominently in the newspaper business in this section for so many years.
"He was born near Dayton O., in 1833, and came to Minnesota territory in 1854, locating near Chatfield in Fillmore county. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company B. of the Fifth Minnesota infantry. He was elected sargeant but rose to the rank of captain and at the close of the war was on the staff of Gen. L. F. Hubbard.
"Histories of the Indian massacres, when the Sioux broke loose in '62, give Capt. McGrew credit for the saving of Fort Ridgely. His bravery and skill as an artillerist saved the position and the settlers gathered in it for protection. At the close of the war he returned to Minnesota and represented Fillmore county in the legislature."
