Borthwick began military service on 15 August 1864; he enlisted as a Private at the age of 42 (record shows 31), two years after his brother Alexander, in Company G, 11th Infantry Regiment Minnesota, on the side of Union during the American Civil War. He was discharged in June of the following year.9
