Milit-BegRobert C. Borthwick began military service on 15 August 1864; he enlisted as a Private at the age of 42 (record shows 31), two years after his brother Alexander, in Company G, 11th Infantry Regiment Minnesota, on the side of Union during the American Civil War. He was discharged in June of the following year.9
WitnessHe was enumerated on the census on 1 June 1865 in the household of Harvey B. Hicks in Otsego, Wright County, Minnesota, USAG. included in the household with Harvey were his wife Sarah, their daughter Mary, her husband Robert C. Borthwick and their son Harvey J. Borthwick. Other children of Harvey Hicks present in the household were Jane M., Harvey Jr., Nancy J. and Eliza M. At this census the mother of these children is not revealed.10
