| Note | George required glasses when he was a little boy. He had about seven years of piano lessons, going to Dauphin, Manitoba on a weekly basis to get instructions. Ross relates that when George was young he found a pail of lard in the pantry in Ethelbert. The living room had been freshly painted and through the alughter from Morris they proceeded to plaster the walls, much tothe dismay of their mother when she found out what they were doing. I guess these two got into earlier trouble at Mabella. Since Mabella was in the sticks a large larder had to be maintained. The two boys got into the pantry one time and proceeded to tear off all the labels on the cans. Suppers were always a surprise for a long time. George left at a young man to work in telegraphy, living in the Yukon during the War II. After the war he and his bride, Kay lived in Winnipeg. He moved to Toronto with his family where he continued to work in telegraphy for the CNR. He also worked in radio servicing. He moved to Cobourg, Ontario, where Kay still lives (1999). After he retired he worked on a contract basis in Zimbabwe setting up a communications network. He had just returned for a second contract extension when he contacted Heptitus C (from drinking polluted water)and died.1 |

Sheloved to play bridge and curl which she played up to the year of herdemise. Her greatest love was gardening which she spent a great many hours at.When Murray got my first car and took his mother out for rides in the25 or miles that was available at the time in Atikokan, They neverfailed to stop and shovel up moss for the garden. She spent many hours trying to tutor her son Morris, who was mentallyslow, a heartbreaker for the family. She came into her own with her grandchildren always ensuring thatthere was a lot of cookies when they came for their almost dailyvisits. This carried on in the manner of gifts and toys for the kids. The family fondly remember the nights that they spent sitting aroundthe radio listening to the Lux Radio Theatre, Jack Benny, The GreenHornet, Fibber Magee and Molly, Fred Allen etc. Moore Lake is a little lake in Renfrew county Ontario, Her dadapparently was a trapper at one time.(see his story.)1 |

| Note | Clayton was born in Stephens Minnesota where his dad was a station agent. Stephens at that time was the end of the line. A stage coach linked Stephens to Greenbush Mn. He took his schooling at Kulm ND where he went to live with his uncle Lote Viets. Clay first went to work for AT&T in Fargo ND.At and T went out on strike and Clay hearing of a eight hour day plus better benefits went to Canada. AT and T were impressed with his excellent telegraphic skills would have liked to keep him.(Ross's comment) Clayton came to Canada in 1918 where he went to work for the Canadian National Railroad in Atikokan. It was there that he met his future wife, Pearl Code. They were married in 1921 and they moved to Huron about 40 miles from Thunder Bay as a telegrapher. He was a active member of the Kiwanis Club and was a per annual chairman of the Easter Seals campaign, personally sending out hundreds of letters in that endeavor. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. According to his diary notes, he took responsibility for a missed train order almost causing a train wreck. Ross knew of the incident and reported that Clay was covering up for George Code( his brother inlaw) who was just starting out as a telegrapher. In any event the dispatcher also missed it. No apparent punishment was issued. They moved, together with their 3 children, to Ethelbert Manitoba in1927. Warren was born in Ethelbert. Ross tells of Clay and Pearl who were scheduled to catch a train out of Warroad during the 1920's. They started from Badger in lots of time but unfortunately the car, a Ford Model T, had 3 flats on the way. They just made it. In leaving Clay told Ross to drive the car into a ditch,It returned to Badger without a hitch. The family lived in Ethelbert for 15 years when the lure of greater earnings during the war years moved them to Gypsumville Manitoba. The lure was large scale whitefish that was shipped from Lake Winnipeg to markets in the big cities. After three years they moved to Atikokan, Ontario where dad worked as Supervisory agent until his retirement in the early sixties. His number in the CNR seniority list was 1917 SDORT #518. Ross related a story about Clayton and the Greek Orthodox priest. The priest came to pick up a large bottle of wine from the station. They got into a discussion about religion.Eventually to cool down the talk they started to sip at the bottle. Ross reported that he later saw them, still discussing religion walking arm in arm down the road. Clay was a Justice of the Peace for many years in Ethelbert. He was a member of the Kiwanis club in Atikokan where he was head of the Easter Seals campaign. He skied and fished and read books for recreation. He didn't like politics. He had two cars in his lifetime, a Chevrolet (1928) which he had all kinds of problems with so he traded it for a 1929 Plymouth. He kept that car for at least 10 years. We made many trips to Dauphin Man. and visited with Ed and Jenny McClean (Pearl's sister) Clay was a cigarette smoker and that developed into emphysema. This was diagnosed in the late 60's complications of which lead to his death in 1981.1 |

| Note | Morris, his dad, wanted Ross to take music lessons and sent him to ateacher. The Goodwins had a pump organ that Ross played at. So when hestarted the first lesson his feet kept pumping like mad. The teachertook exception to this practise and put her legs across Ross's to stophim from moving his legs. That was his one and only lesson. Ross played with many dance bands, especially at St Cloud. At thattime, before the WWI there were many Germans who were arrogant. Healmost got into a fight with the Germans but fortunately was saved bythe owner. He was up for most of the night on many occasions, thengoing back to work on the shreshing machines on the farm. One of thestaples of his life was Velvetta sandwiches. Ross plays the piano, clarinet and tenor and alto saxes. Ross workedin over 90 Railroad stations with the Canadian National, The GreatNorthern, the Southern Pacific and the Burlington Northern. Ross tells of the cook's car in Mabella where it was hard to tell ifthe pies were blueberry because the flies covered them all. They werebrushed off before they could be eaten. Like St Cloud when Ross wentto a dance there was a lot of drinking and fighting. This time theywere Finns. He had one particularly bad time when he escorted a girlhome who had drank too much wine and vomited all the way home all 7miles! He also related about his marathon trips of delivering mail toa camp that was located on a island and to get to it he had to go onthe velocoped (rail) for 4 miles, then paddle a canoe for 2 miles. Ross was on a spare list for a long time during the dirty 30's. Hemade the mistake of going to the Southern Pacific(CP) where he wasguaranteed a steady job. He quit the Great Northern and went to workfor the SP and worked there for 2 days and was laid offtogether with alarge group of people. He returned to Minneapolis where he was hiredfor the Mesabi Range RR Later he moved to California but had to move-no house. Went to Washington to work. He worked at Scenic WA for 5years Scenic has a annual snowfall of 540 inches!. He then moved toSeattle then retired to Great Falls. Ross tells of being in Buckeye AZ in 1931 and was in the station withMilton. Ross was taking the 2nd trick operating where the previousoperator said there was a terrible smell like someone was sending meatthru the railway. It was the victim of Amie Ruth Judd! Ross loves crosswords, and red velvet suits. He got one from Karen whomade a evening jacket and has made good use of it.1 |
