Note	BIOGRAPHY Charles, a direct descendant of one of our founding fathers, William of Portsmouth. He was educated at the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University at Boston Mass. As an American ornithologist, he was a Honorary Curator of the Boston Society of Natural History and from 1895 was non resident Curator of Ontology at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. He was head of his department at his death in 1921. He established one of the first bird sanctuaries in the United States at Hyannis, Massachusetts, where he had an estate at the time. It is there that he discovered a new bird, a deep sea species now known as 'Cory's Shearwater' (Puffinus diomedea borealis). Charles also was the author of many books, 'Hypnotism and Memorization', 'Montezuma's Castle', some Madrigal plays and some sea chanties, 'Ship's work songs'. His most important work was the first two volumes of 'Birds of America' (1918-1919), the remainder was completed by others. They may have had a daughter Hattie who died young.¹
