NoteJames came to the West from Lancaster, Glengarry County, Ontario, Canadain 1882 and homesteaded on S.W. 22-16-8 in Grenfell, now the farm ofMilton Box. Mr. McDonell had a large family. His sons, James 'Jim'Sterry McDonell and Dan saw active service in the Riel Rebellion in1885. On returning home Jim proved up on a homestead by the PipestoneRiver, but later moved back to the original farm. He married PhoebeLamb, and their family grew up in the Summerhill District. His sons,James and John, farmed the old homestead for some years, then later movedto Northern Saskatchewan. Bob McDonell homesteaded on what is now (1980) Edith Moore's farm. Heand John Lamb bought the first binder in the district. It tied onlyabout half the sheaves, but was still much better than cutting wheat witha mower and binding it by hand. Later, a fire destroyed Bob's crops andalso the binder. Bob went to the Klondike with his brother-in-law, DaveEnnis, and didn't return to the prairie. Dan McDonell married Miss Fanny Copeland and homesteaded in the ArlingtonDistrict. Dan kept a pack of hounds and was fond of hunting. Two of the McDonell girls married two Ennis brothers, Dave and Joe.Belle married Robert A. Copeland, and Annie married Ernest Moore.
