| Note | BIOGRAPHY: One place on Prince Edward Island that Lucy Maud Montgomery (Author - 'Anne of Green Gables') loved the best was her Uncle John Campbell's house at Park Corner on Rte. 20. The house, still owned by descendants (as of 1996) is open to the public and contains many artifacts relating to Maud's life, including rare first editions of her books. She spent summer holidays there as a girl, went there to live when her grandmother died, and was married in the parlour in 1911. Maud described Park Corner as 'a big white house smothered in orchards. Here, in other days, there was a trio of merry cousins to rush out and drag mein with greeting and laughter. The very walls of that house must have been permeated by the essence of good times.' Many of Maud's stories were inspired at Park Corner. The pond on the Campbell's farm became her 'Lake of Shining Waters.' ---- (excerpt from Lucy Maud's Island, a promotional flyer for PEI visitors.) |
