| Birth | Justin Dyer was born on 15 July 1829, in Jefferson, Schoharie County, New YorkG. birth date not documented. The year 1829 used here is given by MinnieCohen gravestone reading, but this could be a misreading due to the age of the stone and it is the year 1827, given by the 'Bouton Papers', that is correct. However 1827 would conflict with birth date of Justin's sister, Adeline. Justin is confirmed to be the father of Georgia Dyer in Georgia's death certificate. Justin is listed in the 'Gazetteer and Business Directory of Schoharie County, N.Y. for 1872-3' as farmer and as the 'inspector of elections'.The names of Justin's two children, Stella and Milton, have been taken from the following note to me from Florence (Gallup) Bunn Falconbury,Georgia Dyer's granddaughter: 'Don't know too much about Dyers except Grandma Gallup was a Dyer, had a brother Milton and a sister Stella.'This brief reference is the only supporting source for these children that I have come across. |

| Name | Mariah Patchin was also known as Mariah Dyer.2 |
| Note | Maria is also confirmed as being Georgia's mother in Georgia's deathcertificate. From the Gilboa Monitor Obituary Pages of the Feb 6, 1879 issue: PATCHIN - In Jefferson, Jan 11th, Maria Patchin, wife of Justine Dyer, aged 47 yrs. ******* From Lambert Martin - Gravestone Inscriptions of Schoharie County NewYork by Minnie Cohen has the following inscription: Dyer Justin, July 15, 1829 Maria, wife, Jan. 12, 1879, 47 ys. 22 ds. A copy of the book Prospectus of the History and Genealogy of the PATCHIN- Patchin Family is held in the historical archives of Old Blenheim, NY.An excerpt of this genealogy, obtained from Ms. Josie Fuller, OldBlenheim Town Historian, reveals a 'Mariah' Patchin recorded who marrieda Dyer. Without doubt, this person and the 'Maria' buried with JustinDyer are the same person because I myself appear in that genealogy asMariah Patchin's descendant. (It should be noted that the surnamesPATCHIN and PATCHEN have appeared virtually interchangeably in thisfamily over the years.) Had there been no other supporting evidence, thename 'Maria' would still be suspect because it is an ethnically unlikelyname to be given by her avowedly Protestant parents of Anglo-Saxondescent. However, there is the more compelling reason that Mariah'sparents unwaveringly followed the custom of the times of choosing thegiven names of their children to honor an ancestor. They named theirdaughter Eliza Adaline after her paternal grandmother and grand aunt, their son Ward Amos after his paternal grandfather, his brother, WinfieldDyer, after his maternal grandfather and their daughter Blanche Mariah,as shown on her birth certificate, no doubt to honor her grandmother,Mariah Patchin. For this record, therefore, 'Mariah' Patchin has beenused. |

| Note | Georgia's date and place of death is according to her death certificate, which also provided her middle initial. The document also provides the names of her parents. Her birth date is determined from her Certified Transcript of Death which provides an age of 46 years, 11 months, 10 days and 8 March 1906 as her date of death. She died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. |

| Note | Dr. Glenn B. Gallup is referenced in a note to Lynn Gallup from (prob.)Florence Falconbury as being 'the 3rd cousin of Winfield', Lynn'sfather. Why should she have mentioned this, Winfield had many thirdcousins? Were they friends when Winfield lived in Jefferson, N.Y. (ifhe did) or Summit, N.Y (if he did) or Binghamton, N.Y.? Dr. Glenn'sgrandmother was Adaline Dyer and Winfield's mother was Georgia Dyer whowas the niece of Adaline so it is likely that Winfield and Glenn becamefriends through this connection. |

| Note | I clearly recall a visit back to Sauk Centre during which I was told bymother that Uncle Ward had died. I remember it well because thecircumstances of Ward's death were nothing less than impressive. Mothersaid that they had received a phone call from Florence Falconbury, Ward'sdaughter, who told them that Ward, who had been the picture of health andhad been riding his bicycle every day to work, had died. He had someminor ailment for which he went to a local clinic and shortly afterreturning home, according to the coroner's time of death, he put a gun inhis mouth and committed suicide. The police investigated, as with allsuch deaths, and upon questioning Ward's physician for a possible reasonthey were told that nothing was wrong with Ward but the wear and tear ofgetting older. Ward was advised, the physician said, that as he wasgetting along in years he should probably consider 'slowing down a bit'.I was incredulous upon hearing all this so I turned to my father andasked, 'But then why would he do such a thing as that?' Dad merelyreplied: 'Ward was always a kind of a queer duck.' (Florence (Gallup)Falconbury, Private Letters). |

| Biographical Note | Winfield's mother died when he was only thirteen and sometime after that the family moved to New Ulm, MN. We do not know if Winfield graduated from high school in Binghamton before the family removed to New Ulm or afterward, or even if he graduated from high school at all. It is not known if his older brother, Ward, also went to New Ulm. Probably he did not. Winfield had left New Ulm and was working in St. Paul, MN, in 1917when the United States entered the war in Europe, eventually to be known as 'The Great War' and then 'World War I'. Soon thereafter he joined the U.S. Army and was assigned to Battery 'C' of the 151st Field Artillery inthe famous Rainbow Division. He said that he had fought in every major battle of the war except one during which he was hospitalized for treatment of an injury resulting from a mustard-gas bomb explosion. After the war, sometime in the early Twenties, Winfield took a job for a chain-store firm named The Burg Company. He traveled about South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin opening the firm's new stores and operating them until a permanent manager could be found. In 1933 he moved from Portage, Wisconsin to Sauk Centre, Minnesota to open another new 'Burg Store’. During the Great Depression the Burg Company became bankrupt but Winfield continued as manager of the store, now renamed a 'Ben Franklin Store, under a new owner. He remained in Sauk Center as a prominent citizen who was actively involved with civic affairs. At some point during his residency there he was able to purchase the store which he sold upon his retirement and removed to Rapid City, SD, where he and his wife lived in and operated a small apartment building they had built near Canyon Lake. Managing the apartments eventually became too difficult for Winfield’s age so he and Florence sold out and removed to Longmont, Colorado to be near their son David and family. Winfield died there in his sleep one night of a cerebral hemorrhage and was buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Florence, his steadfast partner and a wise woman of great wit and charm, stayed in Longmont a while and then moved to Green Valley, Arizona when her son David and Julie and family moved there. She died in Tucson, Arizona of a fall downstairs and was also buried at Fort Logan. |

| Note | Almost nothing of Aunt Eliza is remembered except for the one time whenshe came from California to visit the family of Winfield Gallup, herbrother, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. She had just married her thirdhusband, 'Uncle Dick' so it must have been in 1943 or 44. He was a greatdeal of fun, particularly with his conspiritorial hushing of the Gallupkids when he laced his coffee with whiskey. Lynn remembers Eliza then asbeing uncommonly overweight and always laughing about something or otherbut he had the feeling that his parents were quite uneasy during theirvisit. It may have been because of Uncle Dick's drinking around the kids, something that they had never seen in their home before. |
