ModernGermans call the area Baden-Wurttenburg. This general area of the Rhineriver valley near the French border was characterized in the early 1800sby continual conflict and border disputes between France and Germany.Cities in this area were sometimes in Germany and sometimes in France!Napolean of France was conquering the world; Germany was on the rise;most young men were drafted into one army or the other! One reason forthe German and French people of this era to immigrate to America wassimply to avoid Europe's wars! Another reason could have been religious freedom and idealism. (seeJacob Ferdinand Ruhlmann - Notes) A priceless paragraph is found in Truman C. White's Book: 'Our Countryand its People; a Descriptive Work on Erie County, New York'. Boston:Boston History Co., 1898. volume II, Page 242 In this paragraph, White fixes the coming to NYC of Jacob Ruhlman'sfather, Jacob Ferdinand Ruhlman as 1847. Jacob would have been 21. Theyfirst settled in NYC and then moved to Erie Co., New York. To the best of our knowledge, the Ruhlmanns came from the Dukedom ofHesse Darmstadt Germany, where Jacob Ferdinand Ruhlmann was born in1795. He Married Dorothy Hammerschmidt and they had seven children.Most of the children were educated in Germany. Jacob and DorothyRuhlmann brought at least Martin (age 14) and probably all seven childrento NYC in 1847 where Martin and probably the whole family worked as bootmakers. We are not sure when or where Jacob Ferdinand Ruhlmann died. Perhaps inNYC after 1847 (1852?)--or perhaps in Ebenezer in Erie Co., NY. TheDeath Certificate of his son Jacob Ruhlmann says that he lived in the USand Buffalo for 60 years; If that is true, the Ruhlmann family would havearrived here in 1857, not 1847! Jacob Ferdinand's wife, Dorothy Hammerschmidt is buried in the OldEvangelical Church Cemetery in Ebenezer, NY. We have a wonderful photoof the stone: Dorathea Ruhlmann, GEE (born) 15 Mai 1804 GEST. (died) 28Nov. 1881. So, according to Truman C. White, the seven children of Jacob Ferdinandand Dorothy Hammerschmidt Ruhlmann were: Jacob, Catherine, Phillip,Peter, Martin (b Sept 25, 1833 Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, died after 1898,Orchard Park, NY,) George and Minnie. Our Branch of the Ruhlmans descend from the oldest son, Jacob J. Ruhlmann(the last to use the double nn?) who was born May 19, 1825 in HesseDarmstadt, Germany. He was married twice: The first wife was CatherineWise (According to the death certificate of their son, John Jacob Ruhlman(b. Sept 27, 1852 in NYC.) By 1875, according to the Erie County Census,West Seneca Section, Jacob was married to Anna Mary Dackman who was bornNov 2, 1812 in Germany and died in Ebenezer, Erie Co., NY June 16, 1899. I think Jacob J. Ruhlmann's first wife Catherine Wise died between 1852and 1875 either in NYC or Ebenezer; I would guess NYC, because brotherMartin came to Orchard Park (Erie Co.) NY in 1861. So far we have norecord of a grave marker for Catherine Wise Ruhlmann. Jacob and Catherine Ruhlmann must have had at least Martin J. Ruhlman(born 1850, NYC) and our John Jacob Ruhlman I (born Sept. 27, 1852 inNYC) while they were living in New York City. The obituary of Jacob J.Ruhlmann in the Buffalo Evening News in January of 1917 also lists somedaughters of Jacob: 'Mrs. George Behsman of New Jersey and Mrs. CharlesHensel' (probably of the local Buffalo area). An interesting lady, 'Mrs. Euthenia Ruhlman, 535 South Division Street,Buffalo, NY.' is listed in the 1882 Buffalo City Directory. Perhaps shewas a daughter in law or niece of Jacob Ferdinand Ruhlmann! It is important to read Clara Ruhlman McCue's account of Jacob J.Ruhlmann: 'He was a very devout Lutheran (Or Evangelical Church? JJRVI). Small, very neat with a neat white beard.' Grace Ruhlman Yaxley said that her great grandfather, Jacob J. Ruhlmanthe 'Old Lutheran Preacher' told his granddaughter in law Sophia OhmRuhlman: 'Sophie, Someday you'll understand' (during the time of herhusband, John Jacob Ruhlman II's drinking escapades). According to his death certificate, Jacob J. Ruhlmann was a shoemaker bytrade. He died January 14, 1917 at the home of his son, Martin J. Ruhlman, 241Adams Street, Buffalo, NY. |

Jacob Ruhlman's Death Certificate say's he lived in both the US and Buffalo for 60 years, thus he would have arrived here in 1857. Did Jacob arrive here 10 years earlier and marry Mary Dackman afterward? Truman C. White's book fixes the coming of Jacob's father, Jacob Ferdinand Ruhlmann as 1847 with his children. (his son Jacob would have been 21.) They first settled in NYC and then moved to Erie Co., New York. Jacob's first wife was Catherine Wise. I, (JJR) doubt if Mary Dackman was married to Jacob Ruhlmann at that time. The cause of her death was Bronchitis. She is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Ebenezer, Erie County, New York, U.S.A. next to Jacob Ruhlmann. Her medical information: Death Certificate says she died also from 'General Debility of old age.'. |

He and family came in 1847(same year as the Jacob Ferdinand Ruhlmann family! JJRIV), but it didn'tlast long. In Germany he was a landlord and didn't’t understand Godlyways. He left the Community and bought land near Buffalo, New York. Hischildren left the Community and went their own way. In 1863 he was oldand had spent savings and wrote to say that he wanted to come back andtake up the ways of God. The Community wrote him a strong letter andtold him how he went his own ways -- he was thankful for that. In 1864they allowed him to join again in Ebenezer, where he in ----------------- asked for forgiveness. All of Peter’s children were outside the Community.' 'Peter Hammerschmidt’s wife was Martha Mai born 1801 married inGermany to Peter Hammerschmidt died 1887 East(C-7)' Amana, Iowa 'Maria and her husband Peter Hammerschmidt came to the Community inGermany and came in 1847 to Ebenezer, New York. They did not stay long,went away and bought their own land. In 1864 they were accepted again,but she had a tough time doing according to the rules. She couldn't’tstand being away from her children and returned to them in Buffalo.Shortly after she came back because she could find no rest. She repentedfor her former mistrust. In her old age she became a true member. Mary was thegranddaughter of J.G. Trautmann of Lieblor, (Germany?) who died in 1816. He was born 1833 in Hessen, Germany (same as Ruhlmanns!JJRIV). He was married in 1860 in Middle (Amana, Iowa) to Caroline Noe He died in Feb. 1896 at Middle (Amana, Iowa) (E-18) 'Leonard Hammerschmidt was the son of Mary Trautmann Hammerschmidt fromher first husband (Hammerschmidt): she later married Fredrich Hahn inGermany. She died in 1884 in America.' 'Leonard came from Kurhessen, Germany in 1845 with his mother andstepfather Fredrich Hahn to the Ebenezer, New York Community. The wholefamily moved to Cincinnati under the guidance of Fredrich Hahn who diedin 1848.' 'They returned to Ebenezer, New York; in 1857 they all came to High(Amana, Iowa). Leonard married Caroline Noe in 1860 at Middle (Amana,Iowa) and had two daughters: (Marie Hammerschmidt Leonard d. 1927 andLouise Hammerschmidt (m. Jacob) Geiger d. 1954). He had a strongself-will and this caused difficulties. He worked in a tannery for awhile. He also worked in the Wollen Mill, but when it burned down, hehad no job. For a while, he knitted socks, then worked in an apiary --by doing this he came away from the right purpose in the Community(though his contacts outsiders who bought the honey).' 'When it looked like all was lost, he had several strokes, was partiallyparalyzed in speech and face. During that time he came to repentanceabout his past and got better and was able to help himself. Could havebeen a good pillar if he’d done this earlier!'. Caroline Noe (the wife of Leonard Hammerschmidt) -- (we wonder if she wasrelated to William Noe, one of the early leaders of Ebenezer!) she wasborn in 1840 in Neuured?, Prussia father’s name was Christian Noe (diedin 1842 in Germany) mother’s name was Dorothea Metz? (I wonder ifrelated to the Community founder Christian Metz? JJRIV) who died in Ebenezer, New York,1857. Caroline came to Ebenezer in 1846 with mother Dorothea and John--? Caroline died in December 1927 in Middle (D-32) Amana, Iowa. She is buried at the old cemetery in Ebenezer, NY; we have photo oftombstone.
