Dated 28 February 1853. First I allow all my lawful debts to be paid, and my body interned in a Christian like manor. To my wife Lydia Merritt my dwelling house during her natural life with my household furniture to do with during her natural life, and at her death, according to her own good will and pleasure. To my son Isreal Merritt one half acre of land on the West side of the road in front of my barn and easterly from the spring for a building site, and hold the half acre during the time he occupies it for farming purposes. When abandon to farming purposes it becomes joined property of my heirs, though the buildings erected there remain his property. To my five sons Isreal, Isaac, David, Caleb and Joshua each one fifth an equal share of my real and personal estate, though the estate is not to be divided until my youngest son turns twenty one, or during my wifes natural life. To my daughter Phebe Merritt the sum of one hundred pounds, but not to receive it until my youngest son is twenty one, and then one year after her marriage, assuring she remains celibate until then. The household furniture belonging to my wife shall be equally divided among my five daughters before mentioned at the death of the survivor.
