Fusilier Read was 20 years of age. He enlisted in December last and left for overseas in the spring.

A. Balfour Read Misses His Footing While Crossing a Railway Bridge and Falls to the River Below
Many friends will regret to learn of the sad drowning of A. Balfour Read, son of David P. Read, Read’s Corner, which occurred near Castlegar, on the Columbia River. On Sept. 12, while crossing the high railway bridge at night he missed his footing and fell to the river below. The body was not recovered until October 5th. He was buried at Nelson, B.C. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Dr. J. T. Ferguson. He leaves to mourn his father and mother, three brothers, Joseph E., Erie, B.C; George at home; and Nelson B., Summerside; five sisters, Mrs. Frank Hawke, Malden, Mass; Mrs. Melville Bradshaw, Summerside; Mrs. William McKay, New Annan; Cecilia, Summerside; and Cassie at home. The deceased was 31 years of age and was employed in a lumber mill at Castlegar. He left Summerside about seven years ago and was home on a visit two years ago."5 |
