[Letter from Robert B. Rathbun, Feb.1999]: Charles was a salesman of shoes, store owner, rancher and railroadstation manager. He lived in Chicago, Illinois; Las Vegas, New Mexico;Hutchinson and Dodge City, Kansas; and Rowe, New Mexico. He first worked for MacFarland relatives in a shoe store in Chicago. Itis said he left Chicago after the fire and opened a shoe store in a tentin Las Vegas, New Mexico. He was a cattle rancher and shoe manufacturerin Las Vegas having land also in Range, New Mexico and Guadalupe County.He sold his interests in 1887. He left Las Vegas in 1899 and moved toHutchinson, Kansas being a herdsman there. He had a livestock company,Alamo Livestock Company, in Ness City, Kansas which was sold on August 2,1902. The family briefly settled in Dodge City where they separated.Carrie moved to Colorado Springs and finally Denver. Charles moved toRowe, New Mexico working on the railroad.
