Quigley occurred at his home in St. Peter's on Monday, May 12. He had been in failing health for the past year suffering from cancer. He entered the Prince Edward Island Hospital last July for treatment for a few weeks and again in March, and had just returned home three weeks before his death. Mr. Quigley was in his seventy-eighth year.
"He was a native of Tryon and in early life bought a saw and grist mill property at St. Peter's. He was married to Miss Jennie Walker of Kelvin. He built up a fine lumber and milling business there and resided there until the death of his wife and eldest son, John W., in March, 1912, within one week of each other. Shortly after he sold "The Mills" and moved to St. Peter's Village where he conducted a merchantising business for some years. He married Miss Annie MacDougall of Charlottetown, but within a year she died.
"Later he left the store business in charge of his son Albert and moved back to "The Mills" and married Miss Blanche Balderson who predeceased him a little over a year ago. An unusual fact was that the late Rev. J. M. McLeod, Charlottetown, performed the marriage ceremony each time, first when minister of Kensington and Long River, and later minister of St. Peter's and Marie.
"He leaves to mourn two sons, Edward M. and Albert E. Quigley, and one grandson, Frank W., all of St. Peter's; two sisters, Mrs. Harry Watson (Penzie), and Mrs. W. D. Strachen (Adelaide) of Hyde Park, Mass., both of whom visited him two years ago.
"The funeral which was held from his late residence on Wednesday, May 14th, was largely attended. The service was conducted at the house and grave by his pastor, Rev. E. B. S. Millar of the United Church. The pallbearers were Messrs. Roy McLean, John James MacKinnon, Louis Burage, Daniel McLeod, Watson Partridge, Charles McKinnon." His obituary stated that he was 87 years old when he died, yet two census returns have his birth year as 1863, making him 78 at the time of death.4 |
