He was a very prominent man in Rhode Island, and heldvarious important offices. He served as senator,=also as deputy governorof the state from 1790 to 1799, Lt. Governor from 1799 to1800, In 1800 hewas defeated by George Brown but the following year was again elected. OnOctober 30, 1802, Mr. Potter=elected United States Senator from RhodeIsland. for a term of six years. He was a staunch Democrat. Children were Samuel J. Jr; Ann; Fenner, Joseph, Sarah and Elizabeth.
