Biographical Note*

Roger de Mortimer was a nobleman, and for three years was de facto ruler of England, after leading a successful rebellion against Edward II. He was eventually overthrown by Edward's son, Edward III. Roger Mortimer was also the lover of Edward II's wife Isabella Capet of France, who assisted in the deposition and, allegedly, the murder of her husband. After being accused of assuming royal power without proper authority, he was executed by hanging.²
