Captain Allan MacLean of Stanchel Killed by Oil Truck Near Hunter River.

The accident of Saturday night occurred on the Summerside-Charlottetown highway about two miles west of Hunter River, the victim being Captain Allan MacLean, 54-year-old mill-owner of Stanchel, near Breadalbane, who met instant death when an Irving Oil Company's truck driven by Roy Cameron of Charlottetown struck him as it skidded on the icy pavement and crashed into Capt. MacLean's stalled one-ton truck as he was in the act of putting a chain on the left rear wheel. The accident occurred near the top of a hill at Hazel Grove.

It is understood that Capt. MacLean was on his way home at the time of the accident. Owing to the iced condition of the road he found difficulty in trying to get his Ford truck to negotiate the hill and got out to put on chains, after the machine had skidded to the left side of the road where it stopped.

The oil company's truck, which was empty, was coming down the hill when the rear skidded towards the left. The driver was unable, he told police, to bring his slowly-moving truck back into a straight course and the rear struck the Ford and pushed it towards the ditch. Capt. MacLean, it was believed, was struck on the head by some part of his truck. His skull was fractured according to the coroner, Dr. I. J. Yeo, who is holding an inquest today at Hunter River.

Capt. MacLean was born at Milo, Lot 9, son of the late Capt. Duncan MacLean and Mrs. MacLean. As a young man he went to sea with his father and later sailed his own schooner in the Maritime Province coastal trade. Some years ago he retired from the sea and operated a saw mill at Stanchel. He was twice married, and is survived by his wife, a young daughter and a son, Leslie MacLean, of Stanchel. Surviving also are two brothers, John and Roderick MacLean, farmers at Milo, Lot 9. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 12 O'clock from the Rose Valley Church to Hampton Cemetery for interment."2,6
