M, #99924, b. 22 April 1870, d. 31 October 1934
Name-Com | Alfred Alexander Alphonse Lefurgey is commonly known as Alfred Lefurgey.2 |
Birth* | He was born on 22 April 1870 in Summerside, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.1 |
| He was the son of Hon. John Lefurgey and Dorothea Read.2 |
Death* | Alfred Alexander Alphonse Lefurgey died on 31 October 1934, at age 64, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Obituary: "It is with a profound feeling of regret that we chronicle today the death of Mr. Alexander Alfred Lefurgey, who passed away Wednesday morning in Vancouver, following an operation. Mr. Lefurgey will be remembered by numerous friends in this town and province by whom he was held in the highest regard and in whom the sad news of his death will be learned with a deep sense of regret.
Mr. Lefurgey, who was 63 years of age, was a native of Summerside, having been born here in April 1871, the son of the Hon. John and Mrs. Lefurgey, his mother having been Miss Dorothea Read. He received his early education in the Summerside High School and Prince of Wales College and later went to Mount Allison University where he took his B.A. degree and was one of the founders and Captain of the first football team of that university. He then went to Boston where he entered Harvard University Law School where he graduated with his law degree and being an enthusiastic athlete he was elected Captain of the track team and held the 100 and 200-yard dash records of the university for some years. After returning to Summerside he entered the law office of the late Hon. J. E. Wyatt and also carried on with his brother, the late Mr. J. E. Lefurgey, in his extensive estate interests, including shipping and other activities.
Following family tradition the late Mr. Lefurgey took a strong and active interest in politics and was the representative for the fifth district of Prince County in the local Legislature, and on several occasions in the Federal House for East Prince and later for the combined East and West Prince ridings. In 1897 he was elected to the Provincial Legislature as representative of 5th District of Prince County. In 1900 he was elected as representative for East Prince in the Federal Parliament with a majority of 225 and on taking his seat at Ottawa was acclaimed the youngest member of the House of Commons. He was again elected for the Federal House representing the combined riding of East and West Prince by a majority of 93, and was the Conservative nominee for the County of Prince for a number of years afterwards. His last campaign was in 1917 when he and his uncle the late Hon. Joseph Read were the contestants in the wartime election in this county, the latter winning by a small majority.
On account of the death of his brother, the late J. E. Lefurgey, who was managing large estate interests in British Columbia, Mr. Lefurgey found it necessary to spend a great deal of his time in that province and finally moved to Vancouver about the year 1921, eventually disposing of his residence here in 1921, since which time he has been a resident of the Western metropolis of the Pacific Coast.
Mr. Lefurgey was also prominent in the Masonic Order, being Past Master of King Hiram Lodge, Summerside, Knight Templar of the York Rite, member of the Rose Croix Chapter, Eighteenth Degree in the Scottish Rite and a member of Philae Temple, Mystic Shrine. The deceased was well known for his genial and energetic personality, which made him a favorite with all who had the privilege of his acquaintance."3 |
Burial* | He was buried in the United Baptist Cemetery, Central Bedeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The location of his burial is not known.1United Baptist Cemetery, Central Bedeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. |

Memorial Marker* | There is a memorial tombstone in Runneymede Memorial, Surrey, England. Grave Reference: Panel 105. "During the Second World War more than 116,000 men and women of the Air Forces of the British Commonwealth gave their lives in service. More than 17,000 of these were members of the Royal Canadian Air Force, or Canadians serving with the Royal Air Force. Approximately one-third of all who died have no known grave. Of these, 20,450 are commemorated by name on the Runnymede Memorial, which is situated at Englefield Green, near Egham, 32 kilometres by road west of London. The design of the Runnymede Memorial is original and striking. On the crest of Cooper's Hill, overlooking the Thames, a square tower dominates a cloister, in the centre of which rests the Stone of Remembrance. The cloistered walks terminate in two lookouts, one facing towards Windsor, and the other towards London Airport at Heathrow. The names of the dead are inscribed on the stone reveals of the narrow windows in the cloisters and the lookouts. They include those of 3,050 Canadian airmen. Above the three-arched entrance to the cloister is a great stone eagle with the Royal Air Force motto, "Per Ardua ad Astra". On each side is the inscription: "IN THIS CLOISTER ARE RECORDED THE NAMES OF TWENTY THOUSAND AIRMEN WHO HAVE NO KNOWN GRAVE. THEY DIED FOR FREEDOM IN RAID AND SORTIE OVER THE BRITISH ISLES AND THE LANDS AND SEAS OF NORTHERN AND WESTERN EUROPE". In the tower a vaulted shrine, which provides a quiet place for contemplation, contains illuminated verses by Paul H. Scott."2Runneymede Memorial, name of Flight Sergeant Archie William Lefurgey, Panel 105. Photo courtesy of Marg Liessens. |
