Hammerschmidt1
M, #52632
Note* | A Peter Hammerschmidt is connected with the Ebenezer/Amana Society. (See notes on Jacob Ferdenand Ruhlmann) There is extensive mention of the Hammerschmidts in the official books of the society: ‘Inspirations-History, 1817-1850 Part 3' by Gottlieb Scheuner, Amana, Iowa, 1884. Peter Hammerschmidt was a landlord in Germany and came to Ebenezer, Erie Co., New York in 1847. While we cannot prove the connection yet, we do believe the Hammerschmidts and Ruhlmanns were from the same church and the same area in Ysenberg, Germany (north of Frankfurt). Child of Hammerschmidt is: Dorathea Hammerschmidt, b. 15 May 1804 in Germany, and died 28 Nov1881, Ebenezer, Erie Co., New York. |
Birth* | Hammerschmidt was born in Germany.1 |

Dorathea Hammerschmidt1
F, #52195, b. 15 May 1804, d. 28 November 1881
Note* | Barbara S. Hoehnle, a historian of the Amana Heritage Society at PO Box81, Amana, Iowa, 52203, wrote to John Jay Ruhlman IV in July of 1995 thatalthough she could find no Ruhlmanns, Ohms, Dackmans, Wises, or Baltzleysin their records there have been a number of Hammerschmidts in the AmanaSociety! Remember, our Dorothea Hammerschmidt was born in Germany in 1804 anddied in 1881 and is buried in Ebenezer, New York -- also remember thatthe Amana Society was located in Ebenezer, New York when they came fromGermany (see more about Jacob Ferdinand Ruhlman). We really believethere are connections to our Dorothea! Peter Hammerschmidt (below) couldeasily be the older brother or cousin of our Dorothea HammerschmidtRuhlman! The Hammerschmidts that Barbara Hoehnle lists in the Amana Society are: 'Peter Hammerschmidt born 1796 in Germany married in Germany died March 1884 at East (C-1)Amana, Iowa 'He was with a Community in Germany, and in the 1840’s Communities cameto America, he didn't’t, but had connections. He and family came in 1847(same year as the Jacob Ferdinand Ruhlmann family! JJRIV), but it didn'tlast long. In Germany he was a landlord and didn't’t understand Godlyways. He left the Community and bought land near Buffalo, New York. Hischildren left the Community and went their own way. In 1863 he was oldand had spent savings and wrote to say that he wanted to come back andtake up the ways of God. The Community wrote him a strong letter andtold him how he went his own ways -- he was thankful for that. In 1864they allowed him to join again in Ebenezer, where he in ----------------- asked for forgiveness. All of Peter’s children were outside the Community.' 'Peter Hammerschmidt’s wife was Martha Mai born 1801 married inGermany to Peter Hammerschmidt died 1887 East(C-7)' Amana, Iowa 'Maria and her husband Peter Hammerschmidt came to the Community inGermany and came in 1847 to Ebenezer, New York. They did not stay long, went away and bought their own land. In 1864 they were accepted again, but she had a tough time doing according to the rules. She couldn't’tstand being away from her children and returned to them in Buffalo.Shortly after she came back because she could find no rest. She repentedfor her former mistrust. In her old age she became a true member. Herbrother was Johannes Mai who died in 1868' The other Hammerschmidt family described by Barbara Hoehnle of the AmanaHeritage Society was: 'Leonhard Hammerschmidt (his father died in Germany) mother’s name wasMary Trautmann Hammerschmidt Hahn who died in 1884. Mary was thegranddaughter of J.G. Trautmann of Lieblor, (Germany?) who died in 1816. He was born 1833 in Hessen, Germany (same as Ruhlmanns!JJRIV). He was married in 1860 in Middle (Amana, Iowa) to Caroline Noe He died in Feb. 1896 at Middle (Amana, Iowa) (E-18) 'Leonard Hammerschmidt was the son of Mary Trautmann Hammerschmidt fromher first husband (Hammerschmidt): she later married Fredrich Hahn inGermany. She died in 1884 in America.' 'Leonard came from Kurhessen, Germany in 1845 with his mother andstepfather Fredrich Hahn to the Ebenezer, New York Community. The wholefamily moved to Cincinnati under the guidance of Fredrich Hahn who diedin 1848.' 'They returned to Ebenezer, New York; in 1857 they all came to High(Amana, Iowa). Leonard married Caroline Noe in 1860 at Middle (Amana,Iowa) and had two daughters: (Marie Hammerschmidt Leonard d. 1927 andLouise Hammerschmidt (m. Jacob) Geiger d. 1954). He had a strongself-will and this caused difficulties. He worked in a tannery for awhile. He also worked in the Wollen Mill, but when it burned down, hehad no job. For a while, he knitted socks, then worked in an apiary --by doing this he came away from the right purpose in the Community(though his contacts outsiders who bought the honey).' 'When it looked like all was lost, he had several strokes, was partiallyparalyzed in speech and face. During that time he came to repentanceabout his past and got better and was able to help himself. Could havebeen a good pillar if he’d done this earlier!'. Caroline Noe (the wife of Leonard Hammerschmidt) -- (we wonder if she wasrelated to William Noe, one of the early leaders of Ebenezer!) she wasborn in 1840 in Neuured?, Prussia father’s name was Christian Noe (diedin 1842 in Germany) mother’s name was Dorothea Metz? (I wonder ifrelated to the Community founder Christian Metz? JJRIV) who died in Ebenezer, New York,1857. Caroline came to Ebenezer in 1846 with mother Dorothea and John--? Caroline died in December 1927 in Middle (D-32) Amana, Iowa. She is buried at the old cemetery in Ebenezer, NY; we have photo oftombstone. Archelaus Hammond
M, #35002, b. circa 1769, d. 4 June 1837
Note* | He is referred to in the book, ' St. John River and its Tributaries', by Esther Clark Wright, on pages 101, 102 and 170. Archelaus Hammond, himself an ex-soldier, had settled in the Gagetown area before Elijah moved there. The Hammonds came from Marblehead. His sister Sarah was baptized there 21 October 1739. On 24 September 1764, she married James Oakes. They moved from Marblehead to Cornwallis and quite possibly encountered Elijah and Mary Estabrooks there. Sarah had four children by James Oakes: James (junior), Benjamin, Sarah and Christopher (Christopher was born in 1773). James (senior) died about the same time as Mary Hackett. Sarah Oakes brought her small family to Gagetown and married Elijah Estabrooks on 17 December 1778. They had a further two children, Elizabeth (Betsy) born 30 October 1779, and Hammond, born 29 January 1783. Archelaus Hammond moved to Kingsclear at the same time. He received one lot there and his eldest son received another. The lots in Cambridge were beautifully situated on a ridge overlooking the Jemseg river at its entrance to Grand Lake. The Garrison graveyard was just over the fence on a slope stretching down to a creek. |
Birth* | Archelaus Hammond was born circa 1769 in Maugerville, Sunbury County, New Brunswick, Canada.1 |
| He was the son of Philip Hammond. |
Marriage* | Archelaus Hammond married Jerusha Slocum, daughter of Eliezer Slocum and Thankful, in Maugerville, Sunbury County, New Brunswick.2,3 |
Death* | Archelaus Hammond died on 4 June 1837, in Kingsclear, York County, New Brunswick, Canada.1 |

Charles Agustus Hammond1
M, #52203, b. 3 May 1879, d. 20 May 1957
Note* | He was a farmer by trade. He married Myrtle Long July 3,1898 and they had 5 children. Myrtle died in childbirth bearing Paul Hammond Chamberlayne on Dec. 20, 1980. The Methodist Pastor’s wife Mrs. D.O. Chamberlayne (sp?) in Elkland? loved him so much that they adopted him; (They had just lost a baby of their own). When Sarah T. Tubbs married Charles Hammond in Osceola, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1908, she expected to have two of his children, but ended up having 4! -- The other two were with relatives! In those days, Charles was a dairy farmer in Osceola, Pennsylvania. They rented the Buckley farm across the river (south) from Osceola. - That’s where Sarah was a housekeeper for Charles and the children before they were married. After they were married, Charles, Sarah and the family moved to a house in Osceola where they rented. Charles always wanted a place of his own, so finally they were able to buy the big dairy farm in Lindley, Steuben County, New York where most of the children were raised. They rented a house on 1st St. in Corning, Steuben County, New York for a short time, Charles worked as a parking meter money gatherer. Then they bought the place at 22 Elm St., Corning -- as told to JJR IV by Sarah Hammond, Everson, Whatcom County, Washington March 1972. Charles died May 20, 1957 in Corning, Steuben County, New York. We, John Jay and Nancy Dorian nee Mehner Ruhlman have in our possession a diary kept by his wife, Sarah in the last year or so of his life; also, we, John Jay and Nancy Dorian nee Mehner Ruhlman have his Dixon Analytical Bible which was printed in 1941 where he included much of his family data. Included in that Bible was a set of notes of his own handwriting: I Peter 1 : 22 I. 'First condition of Sanctification is Justification. One is to be Justified in order that they might be sanctified The forgiveness of sin is not an end, but a means to and end II. The consciousness of our need of a pure heart is another condition. It is impossible to take a step in the divine life without theconsciousness of this need. John 7 : 37 -- Matt 5: 6 It is only the soul that feels the “War in its Members” that criesout -- 'Who shall deliver me from the body of this death.' With some, tis a great struggle for they have more light and havemore to settle than others. III. Faith in Christ is also a condition. Don’t try to make works the ground of your sanctification; onlyfaith can bring the blessing. The Agents in the work of sanctification are the same as in our Redemption God the Father- The Son and the Holy Spirit 'The very God of peace sanctify you wholly' To them that are sanctified by God the Father and preserved inJesus Christ -- ' Jude Truth or God’s Word is also an Agent in this work. 'Sharper than any two-edged sword ---, is a discerner of thethoughts-- ' Salvation is to remove that which has been marred by sin. The Spirit burns up the dross -- and renders useless The principle of sin in the soul. Sin is a reproach to God. A true and devoted service always follows the cleaning of theheart. The Bible becomes a new Book for the Holy Spirit unlocks itstruth.' Charles A. Hammond, Corning, Steuben County New York, about 1955. |
