Death*He died on 9 February 1947, in Prince Edward Island Hospital, Charlottetown, Queens County, Prince Edward Island, Canada; Obituary: "The Late Hugh John Gordon Held Various Responsible Positions in Bank of Nova Scotia

The death occurred in the Prince Edward Island Hospital on Sunday, Feb. 9, of Mr. Hugh John Gordon, retired bank manager, in his 75th year. A native of Alberton, a son of the late John and Mrs. Gordon, he joined the staff of the Charlottetown branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia on June 9, 1890, and served that institution continuously from that time until his retirement 42 years later.

A man of fine intellect and pleasing personality, his promotion was rapid and, after a comparatively brief apprenticeship at the Charlottetown branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia, the late Mr. Gordon was assigned to the North Sydney branch as manager. After a few years there, his ability as an executive was recognized by his assignment to take charge of the Bank's business in Port au Spain, Trinidad. From Trinidad he came to Moncton, N.B. as manager and after some years in the New Brunswick city was placed in charge of the Bank at Yarmouth, N.S. His next assignment was as manager of the Bank at San Juna, Puerto Rico in the West Indies. He retired from active service while manager of the Bank in St. Stephen, N.B.

On June 7, 1905 he married Jane Millner, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Wallace Millner of Charlottetown, and granddaughter of the late Mr. George Millner, who at one time conducted a business on Great George Street. Three daughters were born of the marriage: Margaret Huntley Syvertsen, whose husband is Dean of the faculty of Medicine, Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H; Claire Millner Olmsted, who lives with her husband in Long Meadow, Mass; and Flora Huntley Russell, who resides with her husband in Jasper, Indiana. Besides his wife and three daughters, the late Mr. Gordon is also survived by three sisters: Mary, Annie, and Mrs. Alfred Phillips, all living in Summerside.

Imbued with a fine public spirit, the late Mr. Gordon was always ready to give of his time and talents to any movement having as its object the public welfare. For several years he acted as auditor for the Prince Edward Island Hospital, as well as treasurer for the Charlottetown Golf Club. He took a keen interest in religious matters and for several years, and up to the time of his death, was an elder of St. James Presbyterian Church.

The late Mr. Gordon had been in failing health for some months and never fully recovered from a stroke which he suffered last November.

Mr. R. H. Gordon, Alberton, a former Liberal member for the First District of Prince in the Provincial Legislature, is a cousin."4

Burial*He was buried in Sherwood Cemetery, Brackley, Queens County, Prince Edward Island, Canada.6
