Note*HON. BENJAMIN6 DOUGLAS (Daniel5, Robert,4 Thomas3, Robert2, William1),born in New London, Conn., March 14, 1785. He removed with his father'sfamily to Wallingford, Vt., in 1797; went with his brother Christopher to Springville, N. Y., in 1811; returned to Vermontat the close of the year, and married Lucy Townsend, of Wallingford, in1812 or 1813. In 1814 he emigrated to Fredonia, N. Y. In early life hewas a tanner, but afterwards, and for most of his life, a farmer. He wasfor one term, commencing about 1830, sheriff of Chautauqua county, N. Y.,and in 1840 was a member of the state Legislature. Soon after this heemigrated to Michigan, and settled on a farm near Ann Arbor.

Note*His carly life was passed in Fredonia, N. Y., whither his parents hadremoved from Vermont. In 1837 he removed to Detroit, Mich., and hasresided near that city ever since, except the year 1838, which he spentat Ann Arbor. Since 1859 he has resided at Grosse Isle, a suburb ofDetroit, in the Detroit river, a few miles below the city. He wasreporter of the Supreme Court of Michigan from 1845 to 1849, and one ofthe judges of the same court from January, 1852, to May, 1857, when heresigned, and resumed the practice of his profession as a lawyer inDetroit, in which he has since been engaged. In April, 1856, he marriedElizabeth, daughter of Henry M. Campbell, an old resident of Detroit, andsister of the Hon. James V. Campbell, LL. D., Marshall professor of law,in the University of Michigan, and for the last eighteen years one of thejudges of the Supreme Court of the state.

He attended the academy in his native placeand received the degree of M.D. from the College ofphuysicians andsurgeons, Baltimore MD., in 1842. He practisedmedicine in Dearborn MI.,1843-44; served as assistant to theprofessor of chemistry at theUniversity of Michigan, 1844-45;lecturer on chemistry and geology,1845-46; professor of chemistry,mineralogy and geology, 1846-51; ofchemistry, pharmacy, medicaljurisprudence, geology and mineralogy,1851-55; of chemistry,mineralogy, pharmacy and toxicology, 1855-70; ofchemistry, 1870-75;and of metallurgy and chemical technology, 1875-77.From 1870 to=he was director of the chemical laboratory. He resigned hiscollegeduties in 1877. He published; Tables for QualitataiveChemicalAnalysis (1864); and Qualitataive Chemical Analysis (withProf.Albert B.
