The names of 2 of the sons and 3 of the daughters that we know for sure are: Elizabeth, Sarah, Matilda Ann, Nathaniel B. Jr., and Isaac. There is a story among some of the family that there were three Cottle brothers living in Canada. Their father died and they were left to provide for the family. The three brothers had a fight over a barrel of apples one day. The fight was so severe that two brothers left home and never came back. Nathaniel B. Jr. is the brother that stayed. Isaac was a witness at his oldest sister, Elizabeth's wedding, then there is no other mention of him in Canada. It is supposed he entered the US sometime after that. Nathaniel is not a common Cottle name and the fact that it is found in Nathaniel Cottle is as far back as I can go so far. Nathaniel Cottle only had 3 sons. David (named for his father-in-law), Nathaniel (namedfor self) and Isaac ( I assume this was his father's name. I have placed him as the son of Isaac, Sylvanus, John and Edward Cottle from Martha's Vineyard. Sylvanus was the Cottle that left and his son Isaac went to Maine. Coy. Hello Cousins, I hope all of you are doing well and your families. I have found a new name in Nathaniel Cottle and Catherine Fletcher line. Alvoretta Cottle was mentioned in Nathaniel B. Cottle's will of 1872 leaving her and Granville Cottle 40$ each. Nathaniel mentions all his living children by name leaving them different things but at one point he mentions these two. Granville was a bachelor probably the oldest child of Nathaniel and Catharine and then Alvoretta? I think she might be one of the unknown daughters and I think she never married hence the $40.00 inheritance from a nephew. Possible she and Granville shared a place he being older brother and all. Just an idea would account for never having her name anywhere. Maybe if we all look for her we will find something. Just wanted to keep you all up to date. Helen Nathaniel Cottle and Catharine Fletcher married in 1781. [Note: He was born in Martha's Vineyard. | Note* | Richard grew up on Ocean Avenue in Portland, Maine singing around the piano with his family and in Sunday School at the Chestnut Street Church. He was movie star handsome, loved to sing and had the heart of an evangelist. With wavy blonde hair and baritone voice, he cut an impressive figure. He began graying at very early age. At 17 he married, 14 Jun 1945 Evelyn Garner of Grady, Alabama. They had 3 daughters. Richard I. Cottle entered the Army of the United States on July 16, 1943and was a Flight Officer ASN T9 230. He was in the 224th AAFBU, Sec I, Sq A, Class E. He entered while in Maine and went to Officers school in Montgomery, Alabama. After Alabama he was transferred to Texas. On October 28, 1944 his orders were coming out of Santa Ana, California. By April 2, 1945 He was stationed at Sioux, Iowa. On December 13, 1945 while stationed at Mitchell Field, New York and attached to 110th AAFBU, Sq T, Richard I. Cottle T9230 F/O separated himself from the UnitedStates Armed Forces. After serving in the Air Force during WW II as a pilot, he went on to college in Alabama and became a Baptist minister. He returned to Maine and after much difficulties, on 17 November, 1958, Evelyn and Richard were divorced. Richard then became a truck driver in Maine and Massachusetts. On 07 November, 1961 he married second, Marion Frances Findlay. She had 4 children, but none came from this union. Dick, as he was called, worked in the Maine School for the Deaf in Falmouth where he did maintenance. He also had many carpentry jobs. Richard was a member of the Maine Ham Radio Operators Association and the Maine Country Music Association. He and Marion formed the County Kings, a Maine country music band that played at small halls. Marion died on 05 April, 1988. In the spring of 1990 Richard moved to Alabama to be near his daughters and to try to develop a relationship with them. He loved to sing 'Just a closer walk with Thee' and 'I'm Just a Wayfaring Stranger'. At the time of his death he was preparing a sermon for the Methodist church in Verbena, Alabama. On Saturday, 16 February, 1991 in his trailer home in Verbena, Alabama, his water pipes had frozen. He was using a torch to free them when he had a massive heart attack and died. The torch remained burning and caught the trailer on fire. Everything was destroyed. He was cremated and buried in the Yarmouth Cemetery in Cumberland, Maine. |
