Name Variation Paulina Maud Cannon is also known as Paulina Maud Canning.1
Birth*She was born in 1873 in New Brunswick.2
She was the daughter of Otis Cannon Jr. and Almira Smith.1
Alt-Birth DateAn alternate recorded birth date is circa February 1881 in New Horton, Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada. This birth date is probably incorrect due to a typo in her obituary. There was a Maud, age 8 years, in the 1881 census.1
Death*Paulina Maud Cannon died on 13 November 1881, in New Horton, Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada;
Obituary: "Died New Horton (Albert Co.) 13th inst., of spinal disease, Paulina Maud Canning youngest daughter of Otis Canning and Almira Canning, age 9 mos." It is my feeling that there is a typo in the obituary, that it should have read 9 years, as there is a Maud, age 8 years, in the 1881 census.1

(Witness) Census HeadHouseholdShe was enumerated on the census of 1881 in the household of Otis Cannon Jr. in Harvey, Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada. Otis and Edgar were farmers. The family religion was Baptist.2

Biographical Note Newspaper article from The Islander newspaper: "A most melancholy accident, attended with loss of life, occurred in the neighborhood of Cascumpec on Saturday night last. The dwelling of Samuel Cannon, Shoemaker, a poor man, living on the Kildare Road, was destroyed by fire, together with all his furniture, tools and clothes of the family. It appears that the parents left home a short time before the fire broke out to visit some relatives living about a mile away, leaving the house in charge of the two eldest children, a girl of twelve and boy of ten - the remainder, four in number, being in bed. The two left in charge, becoming weary, retired to rest and had scarcely fallen asleep, when they were awakened by the flames which were curling round their beds. The girl succeeded in effecting her escape by the door, and opening the window, endeavored to assist her brother out, but becoming confused with smoke and flames, he sank to the floor and, with the other four children, was consumed with the building. The girl, though badly burned and in a state of nudity, succeeded in reaching a neighbor's house on foot, where she now lives and little hopes are held of her recovery from the effects of fire and exposure. A spectator describes the scene as heart rending when the parents reached the burning ruins and learned the calamity that had befallen them. The mother could scarcely be restrained from rushing into the flames in search of her offspring and it required the strong arms of two men to prevent her The remains of the children were found the following day, literally burned to cinders. The parents of this calamity are reduced to great poverty and charitably disposed persons in Ch'town as well as in the neighbourhood, will, it is hoped, contribute something for their relief. Contributions will be received at Mr. G. T. Hazard's Book Store". Following the deaths of five of their six children when the farm house burned to the ground, Samuel and Hannah left to settle in Bideford. (Note: The newspaper account refers to "the deaths of five of their six children". They actually had seven children, leaving the survivor, "a girl of twelve", of the fire to be either Elizabeth, age 13, or Sarah, age 11. on 4 April 1857 in Cascumpec, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.8
