Name Variation Adalaide Wallace is also known as Adelaide Wallace.4
Name Variation Adalaide Wallace is also known as Adalade Wallace; Her name shows as Adalade in the LDS transcription of the 1881 Census, and Ada in the PDF copy of the original 1911 Census page.3
Birth*She was born on 5 June 1868 in home, Alberton, Prince County, Prince Edward Island. the 1901 census has her birth date recorded incorrectly as 6 June 1867.2,5
She was the daughter of George Wallace and Sarah Stapley Cannon.3
BaptismAdalaide Wallace was baptized on 25 July 1868 in St. Peter's Anglican Church, Alberton, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, 46.81268,-64.06454; the officiating clergyman was Rev. R.W. Dyer.2
(Witness) Census HeadHouseholdShe was enumerated on the census of 1881 in the household of George Wallace in Lot 12, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. His occupation was "not given" (LDS transcription has this in error as "Woolsiven"), and religion was Church of England. Sarah's religion was entered as Methodist. Their children were entered as William, Adalade, Susannah, Robert B.S., Eva Jane, G. Bayfield and Mansfield, all Church of England. Adalade, Susannah, Robert and Eva Jane were listed as going to school.6
Education*Adalaide Wallace was studying in 1881 in Prince Edward Island; She was attending school at the time of the 1881 Census.3
Marriage*She married Thomas Humphrey Townsend, son of John Townsend and Mary Jane Jones, on 12 July 1887, in Mount Whatley, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada. There were five children from this marriage.5
(daughter-in-law) Census HeadHouseholdAda Wallace was enumerated on the census of 24 April 1891 in the household of John Townsend, as a daughter-in-law, in Westmorland Parish, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada; Enumerated in the household of John Townsend (age 72) were his wife Mary Jones (age 62), their son Thomas (age 41), his wife, Ada Wallace (age 23), their daughter Gertrude (age 2), Hattie Wells (age 14), granddaughter of John and Mary and daughter of their daughter, Sarah Ann Townsend (now deceased) and Benjamin Wells. Also enumerated was William Daniels (age 10), listed as a grandson; his parentage has yet to be determined. John and Thomas were farmers. John and Mary were Presbyterians, while the remainder of the household were Methodists.7
Name-ComAdalaide Wallace is commonly known as Ada, in 1901.8
(Wife) Census HeadHouseholdShe was enumerated on the census of 31 March 1901 in the household of Thomas Humphrey Townsend, as his wife, in Westmorland Parish, Westmorland County, New Brunswick. Included in the household with Thomas (age 51) were his wife Adalaide Wallace (age 33), children Gertrude/Gertie (age 12), Annetta/Nettie (age 8), William (age 4), Eva (age 2) and Bruce (age 6 months). There was also his mother, Mary Jane Jones (age 74), his cousin Emma Townshend (age 54, relationship recorded as 'aunt') and his niece Hattie M. Wells.8
Census HeadHousehold*Adalaide Wallace was head of the household in the census of 1 June 1911 in Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Adelaide (Ada on the census form) was head of household, but not a widow. There is an entry stating that "husband is in Jolicure, NB". Thomas and son Seymour were living on the Jolicure farm at the time of this census. Ada's other children were living with her in Amherst (Gertrude 22, Devonia 19, Gwendolyn 13 and Bruce 10). This must have been a boarding house as there were seven boarders, including Arthur Preston Walker. One must assume that through this connection with the Townshend family he met his future wife, Ella Mae Townshend. Thomas H. Townshend is a 1st cousin of Ella's father, Frank Townshend. Ada's husband Thomas was listed in the 1991 Census as head of household on the farm in Jolicure with son Seymour, 15.9
Death*She died on 17 April 1934, at age 65, in Hôtel Dieu de l'Assomption Hospital, Moncton, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada; cause of death was hypostatic pneumonia. She was living in Amherst, Nova Scotia, at the time of her death. The informant for her death certificate was her daughter Devonia.10,5
