Jemima Mead.The Titus family in Canada began with the Loyalist movement and theexodus of at least four Titus families from Long Island, New York, allfrom about 1780 to 1790. As the British began their withdrawal from LongIsland, many families that were still loyal to the King of England madethe decision to leave with them. Six hundred families went back toEngland and about as many went to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick andreceived land grants. The following Tituses, in addition to Isaac, areknown to have moved to Canada: John Titus, who eventually settled inQueens Co., New Brunswick area and whose son went on to found Titusville,New Brunswick; David Titus, who was a single grantee of land in DigbyCounty, NS. (He came from Queens County, Long Island); Edmond Titus, withone dependant, who had a land grant in Digby, NS; Silas Titus, who livedin New Brunswick for a while and disappeared; and Benjamin Titus, whowent on to Ontario. According to 'The History of a Nova Scotia Village'by Mary Kate Bull, 'Isaac Titus was also a prosperous farmer. As well asa house and farm on Long Island, he owned a new ship. He was compelled tojoin the American militia against his will, but escaped to join theBritish. He became a Captain, was wounded and carried to Bedford gaol inWestchester, New York, where he was imprisoned for 12 months andeventually ... he was allowed to leave and joined the other loyalists inNew York. He came to Digby, (Digby Co.), NS and settled at Trout Cove.' Aclaim for losses he sustained in the U.S. was presented from Annapolis,NS in 1784 and another in 1786.

Note*Jacob Titus, son of Lewis and Olive (Blakeley), on Mar. 26, 1828. He b.1805-10. d. Sep. 18, 1860. Jacob was listed in a census in 1861. Sydney Thurber wrote that Jacob was killed by a fall from a cliff at Victoria Beach while picking blueberries. He said that Sarah remarried, first to a Hayward and then to an Ellis. The Digby Courier of Aug. 12, 1892 states that Mrs. Hayden, Lower Granville, visited her son, Howard Titus. An obituary in the Digby Courier on Feb. 26, 1904 records the death of Mrs.Sally Hayden on Feb. 20, 1904.

John Greenwood on May 16, 1732, with intentions posted on Jan. 8,1731-32. A subsequent entry records the marriage of Alithea Titus, widow, to Isaiah Carpenter on Sep.12, 1734 by Rev. John Greenwood. He b. Feb.7, 1714 at Attleboro, Bristol Co., MA, son of Noah and Sarah (Johnson). Their child: 6. Amy Titus. (Amie, according to Titus records, Ame on Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut marriage record, Ame on son, Amasa's Pomfret birth record). b.1733. d. Apr. 3, 1808 (New Brunswick records). There is no definite proof, but evidence suggests that Amie Titus, daughter of the above John and Althea Titus, is the same Amy Titus that married Edward Coy and settled in New Brunswick. Pomfret town records read of the 'marriage between Edward Coye and Ame Titus solemnized January ye 2nd 1755.' As far as it can be determined this is the only Pomfret record containing a Titus name, although the birth of their son is recorded as follows: 'Amasa Coye son of Edward Coye by Ame his wife born July ye 31 1757.' m. J. Edward Coye (previously McCoy, later Coy). He b. May 6, 1725 at Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut. d. Sep. 19, 1795.1

Sons Amasa, John, Edward, David and Benjamin the remainder of my real and personal estate, they to pay their sisters Sarah 10 pounds, Lavine 12 pounds, Hannah 15 pounds, Mary 12 pounds and Anna 10 pounds.' Witnesses: Zebulon Estey, Benjamin Newcomb Jr., Elijah Estabrooks Jr. Inventory dated 'March ye 19' 1796, valued at 605 pounds by Thomas Hartt and Silvanus Plummer included a note of hand of Eleazer Slocum and Andrew Joslin to Amasa Coy, Lots 6 and 7 in Waterborough, land in Gagetown and livestock.

In his article, 'The Family of William Carpenter of Rehoboth, Massachusetts,' he disputes the contention in The Carpenter Memorial that Abigail Carpenter was not John Titus's first wife when he states that 'Amos Carpenter's misreading original records and misrepresenting important evidence contribute to two other major errors concerning certain of William's children. One is that Abigail Carpenter was not the first wife of John Titus but married him in 1659, making her the mother of only the last four of his eight children. Carpenter states that 'on the Rehoboth Town Records the family is recorded as the children of John Titus by wife Rachel.' but examination of the record indicates that all eight children of John Titus were 'borne off his wife Abigail.'' m. 2nd Abigail Carpenter, daughter of William and Abigail (Briant), in1659 (1649 according to Zubrinsky). She b. Apr. 9, 1643 in Weymouth, Norfolk Co., MA according to the Carpenter Memorial. However, there is a baptismal on May 31, 1629 (see Eugene Cole Zubrinsky article). d. Mar. 5,1710 in Rehoboth. She remarried to Josiah Palmer on Nov. 9, 1692 after John's death. He d. Jun. 22, 1709. John was left ten pounds in his mother's will, to be paid him by his brother, Content.1

He b. 1805-10. d. Sep. 18, 1860. Jacob was listed in acensus in 1861. Sydney Thurber wrote that Jacob was killed by a fall froma cliff at Victoria Beach while picking blueberries. He said that Sarahremarried, first to a Hawyard and then to an Ellis. The Digby Courier ofAug. 12, 1892 states that Mrs. Hayden, Lower Granville, visited her son,Howard Titus. An obituary in the Digby Courier on Feb. 26, 1904 recordsthe death of Mrs. Sally Hayden on Feb. 20, 1904. She was known as 'AuntSally.' m. 2nd Alexander Urquhart, m. 3rd Jacob Hayden of Victoria Beach,Annapolis Co. on Dec. 27, 1884 at Victoria Beach, NS. According to theobituary, she had three sons; William, Edward and Howard, all ofWestport. A census of heads of families taken in 1861 lists Jacob witheight children; five boys and three girls. One boy had died within thelast year. The Digby Courier reports a marriage between a Sarah Titus ofWestport and Alexander Urquhart of Tiverton on Jun. 27, 1877 by E. C.Ford at Tiverton, Digby Co., NS.
