Peter Schurman1,2
M, #588, b. 23 July 1819, d. 20 June 1882
Name Variation | Peter Schurman is also known as Peter (At The Point) Schurman.3 |
Biographical Note* | "Peter and Janet lived in the Bedeque-Wilmot area. No deed appears on record that would identify the property, but Janet's death notice (in The Royal Gazette for Tuesday, March 25, 1851) gives her place of death as Wilmot Creek; we know that Peter's father owned the farms now in possession of Elmer and Colin Waugh and Alder Large on the south side of Wilmot River. It seems probable that Peter had settled on this tract when Janet died at the age of thirty-two. The four children were dispersed among relatives and the widower went to Shediac, New Brunswick, to manage a tavern-hotel for the widow Hanington. Her husband, George Hanington, had established the tavern in Shediac some years before, and his death left his wife with four young children and the business on her hands. Mrs. Hanington was a Kennedy, her mother a Darby. Her uncle Isaac had married Peter's cousin Mary; the Kennedys, Haningtons, and Darbys would be back and forth from St. Eleanors to Shediac and no doubt this is how Peter, his home broken up by the death of his wife, was secured as successor to Mr. Hanington. Successor he was, not only in the tavern, but in the home. He married the widow in 1853 and continued to operate the tavern, which according to F.R. Sayer, historian of Shediac Cape, stood on property afterward owned by Robert Murray adjoining the old Madras school grounds." More information is listed in the Schurman book page 141.4 |
Birth* | He was born on 23 July 1819 in Central Bedeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.5 |

This marriage is recorded in the Anglican Church Register in St. Eleanors. "On the 10th inst., at St. Eleanor’s, by the Rev. J. Herbert Read, B. D., Rector, Mr. Peter Schurman, of Wilmont Creek, to Miss Mary Elizabeth Hannington, of Shediac, N.B."6,5 |
