Biographical Note Richard was a Loyalist.2,1

Loyalist Monument, Central Bedeque, Prince Edward Island.
Loyalist Monument plaque detail, Central Bedeque, Prince Edward Island.
Loyalist*A Loyalist of the American Revolution
Birth*Richard Robins was born in Amboy, New Jersey. his ancestry is English. His ancestors migrated to New Jersey about 1615.2,3
Marriage*He married Peton
Land* Richard owned a farm outside the town of Amboy, New Jersey prior to the American Revolution.4
Immigration*Richard Robins immigrated to Lower Bedeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, in 1783.
Richard Robins was a Loyalist from New Jersey who arrived in Lower Bedeque in 1783. The following year he sent for his son, John, and daughter Isabel. (An Island Refuge, edited by Orlo Jones and Doris Haslam) An immigration year of 1785 conflicts with other stories which place the year as 1784, the year recorded for the immigration of John and his sister Isabel. Richard immigrated with Thomas Hooper.1,5,6
Death*He died in February 1784, in Sea Cow Head, Queens County, Prince Edward Island; Richard died of exposure during a return trip from Charlottetown.
"Here are the facts as correctly as can be ascertained from tradition:
Sometime in February 1784, Richard Robbins and three neighbours set out for Charlottetown in quest of supplies; there being no roads they had to follow the ice on Northumberland Strait, the distance being perhaps fifty miles. On the homeward journey a wild snowstorm came up which, after continuing a considerable time, changed to frozen rain, giving everything exposed a hard shell of ice. Hour after hour they continued the wearisome march, the ice cutting their foot-gear, from first doubtless poor; between cold, hunger and fatigue their sufferings were truly excessive, a case where human endurance was tried to the utmost.
About as much dead as alive they at length reached Sea Cow Head, only a few miles from their dwellings; the bank was about a dozen feet high and in their exhausted condition the ascent tried them severely. Robins, a large, heavy man, was unable to climb, and his companions, however desirous, were unable to lend him assistance, so he crawled into a cave in the bank till someone should someone come to his rescue.
The conditions were altogether unfortunate; it took his comrades long to get home, the only horse in the district was several miles off, and when a rescuing party arrived poor Robins was dead. He doubtless fell asleep on entering the cave and so crossed the dark valley in a state of unconsciousness. This was the sad account received by his daughter when she came, with further details which have since passed from memory. The incident is calculated to show the terrible hardships endured by early pioneers who felled the first tree, built the first humble home and raised a smoke on its hearth. They were the true heroes whose names should be honoured and to whose memory lofty shafts should be raised." (A Sketch Book, comprising historical incidents, traditional tales and translations, by John MacKinnon, 1915.)1,2

City Directory*Thomas Robins appeared in the City Directory in 1864 in Lot 26, Bedeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Thomas Robins was listed in the 1864 Hutchinson's P.E.I. Directory as a farmer.5
Census*He appeared on the census of 4 April 1881 in Lot 26, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Thomas was 85, Presbyterian, Scottish, not working and a widower, living in the home of Jabez Tuplin. He died the following year.6
Thomas Robins and two other men were living in the home of Jabez Tuplin. Jabez Tuplin was 40, Baptist, English and a painter. Michael Clear was 60, Roman Catholic, Irish, and a labourer. Both were shown as married although there were no women listed. Benjamin Chamion was 26, Presbyterian, English, no marital status, and was a carriage painter (?). Thomas was 85, Presbyterian, Scottish, not working and a widower. All four men were born on Prince Edward Island.
Death*He died on 7 May 1882, at age 85, in Bedeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada;
"At Bedeque, on the 7th inst., Thomas Robins, Esq., in the 80th year of his age." (The Examiner)
"Died in Centreville, Bedeque, on the 7th inst., at the residence of Murdoch McLeod, Esq., Thomas Robins, senr., in the 86th year of his age. Mr. Robins was a descendant of a family of Loyalists who emigrated to this Island at the close of the Revolutionary War of the U.S. His parents located themselves in Cape Traverse, where the deceased was born in Sept. 1796. Having lost his father at an early age, his widowed mother, with her family of six children, removed to Bedeque, just seventy years ago, the first of the present month, there to face the difficulties and endure the hardships, and which were neither few nor slight, attendant on a new settlement. Often has he entertained the writer with a description of the almost insurmountable difficulties they had to contend with on their first settlement in Bedeque, but having been provided by Nature with a stalwart frame and a superior constitution, together with tact and talent, he overcame every obstacle and became one of our principal farmers, reared and educated a large and respectable family, some of whom are holding high positions of honor and responsibility both in the Dominion and in the United States.
As a neighbour he was proverbial for his kindness and obliging disposition. His house was ever the welcome home for the stranger and the traveller, and he never seemed to enjoy life so well as when surrounded by his friends and acquaintances. He was a genial warm-hearted companion, a kind and loving husband and indulgent parent. But the good old man has passed away, yet long will his name be held in grateful remembrance, and his memory cherished by those he has left behind.
He died having a good hope beyond the grave." (Summerside Journal, 18 May 1882.)2,4
