Edmund clerked for Thomas Benton Brown in Brown & Company's Petrolia,Pennsylvania store beginning in 1876 when he first came to Pennsylvaniaand there apparently met his future wife, Salina Jane Brown. Edmund andJames M. Brown were principals of the company along with Thomas in the1880's. Edmund bought the store outright, becoming the sole proprietorin 1896. 4. Phebe Eights Cobb Chesebro' gave Edmund and Lina their family bibleChristmas 1879 as recorded in the bible. Her entry, confirming theapostrophe, was: 'Lina & Ed From Mother Chesebro' Christmas 1879' 5. A property indenture confirms Edmund's lot in Petrolia, Pennsylvania(1882) . 6. Quit claim deed in Petrolia, Pennsylvania signed with the apostrophein Edmund's signature confirms the use of an apostrophe to represent theshortened name in 1890. 7. 'Edward' on Edmund's and Lina's marriage certificate is an exampleof so many documents with misspellings. 8. Gas and oil lease of farm contains Edmund's apostrophe signature in1902. 9. Edmund's will is dated May 10, 1916 and was probated June 6, 1917 inButler County, Pennsylvania with his wife, Lina Jane Brown Chesebro'appointed executrix. 10. Edmund's grave site is in East Brady, Pennsylvania. 11. Edmund's death memorial plaque misspells name - 'Edward P. Chesbro'. |

George became an important man with National Transit, a subsidiary ofStandard Oil. From the 'Romance of American Petroleum and Gas' (1914): 'George Chesebro, Secretary and Comptroller of the National TransitCompany, was born in the city of New York, July 20th, 1850. He is the sonof Albert Chesebro, who was a resident of New York City for many years,although born in Stonington, Conn. in 1808. The elder Mr. Chesebro diedin Jersey City in 1888. He was a lineal descendant of William Chesebro,who was born in England in 1594 and came to America in the ship Arabella,which sailed from Cowes, Isle of Wight, on March 30th, 1630. He took aprominent part in founding the Massachusetts Bay Colony and laterspending a few years in Rehoboth, Mass., made his permanent home inStonington, Conn. The subject of this sketch was educated in the public schools of NewYork, and was graduated from the College of the City of New York. Soonafterward he entered the law office of Silas B. Bronwell, in Wall Street,but after spending some time endeavoring to fit himself for the Bar hediscovered that his tastes lay in the direction of commerce. He thenabandoned his studies and entered the employ of S. B. Chittenden & Co.,at one time a prominent mercantile firm in New York. Later he connectedhimself with the firm of A. T. Stewart & Company, spending a number ofyears as accountant in the woolen mills of that concern. When the firmdiscontinued the operation of their mill properties in June, 1883, GeorgeChesebro accepted a position with the National Transit Company, at 44Broadway, New York City. At that time Mr. John Bushnell was Secretaryand Comptroller of the Company. Mr. Chesebro, after short service, wasappointed Assistant Secretary and Assistant Comptroller and upon theresignation of Bushnell, in 1907, he was appointed to fill the vacanciescaused by Mr. Bushnell's resignation from office in the variouscorporations with which the latter was then identified. (then followslist of pipeline companies.) In 1875, Miss Frances Augusta Amerman became the wife of GeorgeChesebro. Their home is now at Belle Harbour, N. Y. There are threechildren, Mrs. Caspar A. Miller, residing in Foxburg, Pa; Howard Irving,residing in Belle Harbor, N. Y; George Chesebro, Jr., residing inBrooklyn, N. Y. Mr. Chesebro is a member of the Graduates Club in the City of NewYork, Society of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America, andthe Belle Harbor Yacht Club.' |

He may have removed to oil fields in Ohio. From the Parker Phoenix September 17,1880: 'By the transfer of the Fox Farm Pipe Line [to Standard Oilcontrolled United Pipe Lines], Mr. L. B. Chesebro, who has for severalyears past had charge of the books of the same, goes into the employ ofthe United, and will be stationed in the Company's office at Oil City. Amost accomplished gentleman, competent in the highest degree, the companyare fortunate in securing his services. His many friends here andelsewhere extend their best wishes for all the good fortune that can fallto his lot.' |
